in the Vermont legislature. They voted by huge margins to pass marriage equality. They introduced the legislation with no prodding from the courts. They didn't put it off until a later session. And even many dems from areas in the state that lack support for marriage equality, voted for it.

Great as the decision by the Iowa Supremes was, they don't directly represent the people. The well over 100 legislators in Vermont do. IN the Senate, only 1 dem voted against marriage equality and in the House only a few (6 or so) did. And several repubs voted for it.

On Monday the governor will veto the legislation. On Monday afternoon the Senate will override that veto. On Tuesday the House will vote, and whether they'll override is anyone's guess. Two dems who voted against the bill will vote to override because they're pissed at the gov vetoing legislation with such overwhelming support. Others are undecided.

Whatever happens on Tuesday, the Vermont legislature deserves a shitload of credit for their support for marriage equality. And if the veto holds, the injustice won't be long lived. Douglas will be gone. A dem gov will be elected and this legislation will pass.

1. I hope they do override any veto...
The thing I don't understand is, how that idiot douglas got in there to begin with.

Yes, I follow Vermont politics because I live across the "pond" from you in the Adirondacks and watch WCAX & WPTZ... I don't care much for WPTZ, but WCAX is only slightly better...

2. glad handing.
as you know, VT is all about retail politics and no one presses that harder than Jimbo. He's unbiquitous. I virtually have never been to any event that he didn't pop up at. Just a couple of weeks ago I was at the Burlington Flower Show, and there was Jim, furiously glad handing. That's a big part of it. The other part is that he was first elected in the aftermath of civil unions which was quite a contentious thing back then. Add to that that the dems haven't been running strong candidates and that there's invariably a third party candidate in the running and you end up with Douglas, who cloaks himself in moderate garb.
