Is the Democratic Party more liberal or more conservative?
Edited on Sun Mar-29-09 02:39 PM by kentuck
If we can get healthcare passed and get a more progressive income tax passed and spend more on education, then would we not be a more liberal Party?

However, if we get nothing passed but the bailout of the big banks and a deficit reduction package, then would we be called a more conservative Party?

Four years from now, will we have a more liberal or a more conservative Democratic Party? Or does it not matter? Is it only a label?

1. I really don't know........
This party has such a big tent it's hard to determine what we really are. We are defiantly the more moderate of the two, I'm sure liberals make up a large part of this party and it wouldn't survive without the support of progressives/liberals. So in that sense I would say we are a more liberal party, there are conservatives in this party but I believe the liberals outnumber them.

2. The words "liberal" and "conservative" have very different meanings
historically and geographically. Our nation's founding fathers could be described as liberal or conservative.

4. In four years
I will let you know what kind of a party we have! Trying to see the future doesn't work, and after only 3 months, shouldn't we wait and at least give things a chance to work? Did anyone really think that in only 3 months we would have real "health care", a more "progressive income tax", better education and all the other issues people seem to think we should have by now?

If the economy is not fixed, we won't need anything because life as we know it will no longer exist! It' takes time, and by that I mean years not months.

6. If the present plan to bail out the banks works...
Then we will be a Party of Wall Street.

5. I believe the base of the party is liberal.
But the leadership in Washington as a whole seems to be centrist at best.

7. Even though a majority of Dems call themselves moderates?
I may be wrong but I believe info was posted here at DU which stated the largest group (might not have been a clear majority) of Dems thought themselves to be moderates.

8. You mean "corporatist"??
There is no such thing as "centrist", because the "center" is a false construct made up to enable the Republican infiltration of our party known as the DLC.

Yeah there are true moderates out there. Or some who might be liberal on some issues and moderate on others. But I doubt you would find many even among that group who believe the bullshit myth that Wall Street IS America and must be protected at the expense of all else.

10. Who is anyone kidding?
It's becoming one corporate party - with a few remaining liberals that the corporatists hope will be removed over the next few election cycles.
