from the Detroit Free Press:

Detroit Zoo to adopt 3 lions from Kansas refuge
By Bill Laitner • Free Press Staff Writer • March 19, 2009

Three lions confined within a 60-foot-diameter cage they shared with junker cars, storage barrels, cow carcasses and rats are soon to enjoy much nicer quarters at the Detroit Zoo.

The big cats are coming as part of a court order that will close a junk-strewn animal refuge in Kansas, the same one where a man was mauled in February when he reached into the animals’ enclosure, Detroit Zoo officials said today.

According to photographs of the lions -- two females and a male, all about 8 years old -- “they look to be in good condition,” said Detroit Zoo director of conservation and animal welfare Scott Carter.

"They’ve been looked at by a vet in Kansas” but will be quarantined for a month when they arrive in Detroit around March 30, Carter said today.

Officials with the animal-rights group PETA identified Detroit to Kansas legal authorities as a good place for adopting the cats because of the Detroit Zoo’s reputation for animal rescues and welfare. ............(more)

3. the Detroit Lions need all the help they can get.

I apologize for that joke.

However, I did grow up in Huntington Woods, Michigan, the suburb of Detroit where the Zoo is, and spent much time there as a small child. If the wind was blowing the right direction, we could sometimes hear the lions roaring in the zoo.
