Will GLBT families be welcome at the White House Easter egg roll?
I asked this earlier (DU)

But haven't heard anything new.

Does anyone know if all families will be welcome this year?

The sign-up is online, so who's doing the checking?

Everyone is welcome.

Isn't that nice?

2. Aren't tickets being sold online?
Somehow I doubt an Obama White House will turn away GLBT families at the door, but WTF do I know.

9. I don't think they're for sale.
But, as far as who is welcome, I don't know, that's why I'm asking.

27. And how should the Obama administration make sure that you are "sure."
Edited on Thu Mar-26-09 10:49 PM by rvablue
Should they conduct a survey?

Doubt that they are vetting people and on top of that, would use any family for political gains.

So, I guess you'll just have to be happy not knowing, after knowing "for sure" that the Bush administration made sure these families were excluded.

"LGBT Families Readying for White House Easter Egg Roll Tickets!
In the past few years hundreds of LGBT families have tried to get tickets to the White House Easter Egg Roll as part of an outing by the Family Equality Council. The campaign event is an opportunity for America to come face to face with loving and committed gay and lesbian couples raising children.

This year there are two big differences to note. For starters, Obama has reached out to the Family Equality Council inviting LGBT families to sign up (what a change from the former administration), and 2nd the sign-up for tickets will be done online as opposed to waiting in line."

18. OK, I'll bite... Was this an issue in the past?
Does the White House "cast" the Easter Egg Roll? Does someone make sure there are proportionally represented demographics? Come to think about it, do Baptists get as whacked out of shape about Easter as they do Christmas? Are there billboards that say "Keep Christ On the Cross" or "Keep Execution In Easter"?

How could I have lived this long without knowing these things?

32. Amazing. Honestly, it would never occur to me that that would happen.
Not because B wasn't/isn't an asshole, but because it seems rather petty even for them. I mean, hundreds of people are going to be there. I doubt seriously you can get anywhere near anyone you might want to make a point to. And every picture of the event I have ever seen looked like people walked in off the street, in their church clothes of course.

23. BTW, I've only been to one easter egg hunt, and boy was I disappointed.
For some reason I thought we would be looking for plastic Easter Eggs full of candy. Imagine my disappointment to find that they had planted actual eggs, dyed and decorated. I guess that was exciting in the 19th Century, but then almost anything would have been.

38. No. I can't honestly remember who put it on.
Easter in our house was a big deal, because we were only allowed to have candy on Halloween, Christmas, and Easter. I would get up early on Easter, like Christmas morning and with nearly the excitement. Back then they had things that you could only get on Easter, like these large rock candy hollow eggs with a window in the side and scene inside of them, and giant coconut and cherry filled chocolate eggs that we put in the freezer and ate over a week or so.

39. One source says Eisenhower was first to have black kids, another says much earlier.
Although this was the first large-scale egg roll at the White House, it has been reported that smaller numbers of children had played with eggs near the White House in 1873 and 1876, In this tradition, it also has been said that from the start black and white children shared the White House lawn for this event. The New York Times reported that a photo of blacks at the 1898 Easter egg roll is at the Smithsonian's Anacostia Community Museum in Washington. However, the article also noted that few blacks attended the event (until well into the 20th century) because the reception waiting for them was usually chilly.

And look to the Washington Evening Star for more proof of social strata issues. Of one Easter egg roll during the Hayes Administration, the newspaper reported that a boy in shabby clothes about 14 years of age--traditionally too old to be among the egg rollers--took a basket of eggs and ran through the White House gates onto the street. Police caught him. The other children cheered when the eggs were returned.
