32. Isn't That The Real Issue Here Anyway?
USAs can be fired at anytime but the WH used the Patriot Act to take oversight away from the Senate?

50. No
A lot of issues in play here:

1) Gonzo had promised to the Senate he would not use the Patriot Act provision allowing direct appointment of USAs.

2) Then, Gonzo said they were fired for performance issues, which later turned out to be untrue.

3) Then, they were fired, but they serve at the president's pleasure and it was not for political reasons. Ooops, that was wrong, too.

4) The most serious problem is that with some of the firings, it could be obstruction of justice as some of the fired attorneys were pursuing prominent Republicans.

52. No. The real issue is USA's were being fired for scummy political reasons
such as Guam's USA being fired because Abramoff said so.

59. Not entirelly. The other key legal questions are...
Were any USA's fired with the specific intent of obstructing ongoing or upcoming criminal investigations (eg. Lam's investigation of Cong. Lewis)?

Did members of the White House or Justice Deptment lie or mislead the Congress in terms of the reasons for the dismissal or who was involved?

45. Sampson is insisting that he continued working to dismiss and
replace attorneys under the provision of the Patriotic Act without White House agreement. Specter is actually nailing Sampson's ass to the barn door over this BS. Sampson is "pretending" he was the only one considering using the PA months after the Gonzales, Meirs, et al rejected it. Sampson is trying to convince the committee that he was going to use the PA all by his lonesome to get rid of attorneys. If you believe that I've got the Brooklyn Bridge in some swamp land in Florida to sell anyone who believes that nonsense. He is trying desperately to keep KKKarl, Meirs, Gonzales free and clear - don't think it is going to work. You know you are on shaky ground if you have a repug chewing on your ass.

20. Proof that Specter is a wolf in sheep's clothing...
robinlynne posted this the other day...

interesting email on page 21 of part 4:

january 25, 2007
from: Rebecca Seidel to: 10 DOJ people

re: SJC hearing on USA firings
(the first hearing, february 2007)

"just got off the phone with Matt miner on Specter's staff who called to discuss the hearing. He said we will be getting an invite shortly. Has there been further thought on the DOJ witness?
He asked for a few things......

He is organizing a republican amendment strategy so the dems don't divide and conquer. he asked if we have any amendments to please draft and get them to him. I resent him the talking points (as he had given his copy away) he realized we had a lot of info in there.

so specter wants the DOJ to actually write the amendments, and uses their talking points directly. This says to me that he should be relieved of his position in this particular investigation! He is supposed to represent the senate, which is supposed to represent the people. If he gets his words from the people he is supposed to be investigating...
<snip>

He's a f*cking slimebag. He KNOWS that he has been exposed.

I don't trust him for a minute.

Still busy as a good little GOP operative could be, while the fray goes on with Sampson.

Hurry! Hurry! Hurry, Mr. (Interim non-Senate approved, stealth Patriot Act enabled) Griffin.

:sarcasm:

He withdrew his name from future Senate confirmation, but he continues *serving* in Arkansas.

That's the crucial point.

Edited to add: Griffin is the GOP operative responsible for the Florida "caging lists", which were orchestrated to suppress minority and poor voter turnout. This is critical for people to know.

"Griffin's USA appointment in Arkansas was important to Karl." Now we know why. It was to subvert elections.

86. OMG! I hope someone counts this guy's "I don't remember" memes.
It's insane how many times he's repeating these: I don't remember; I don't recall; To the best of my recollection; I regret this and that; I don't know; I am not aware of; From what I remember; etc. etc.

122. It is interesting Sampson is saying he has not seen the letter
If true, he should chew his lawyer's ass out big time because that letter was in the document dump yesterday TOTALLY comprised of Sampson's drafts of the offending letter that denied any Rove involvement.

If not true, if he has, indeed, seen the letter dated Mar 28, 2007, the only reason I could see for him to deny seeing the Mar 28th letter would be plausible deniability in that I can't explain the conflict because I have not seen the letter where the DOJ acknowledges the conflict and "inaccuracies".

Interesting, to say the least.

131. Hatch is conflating what a jury or an officer of the court can do with what the [ublic can do
If I sit on a jury in crimnal case and a witness declines to take the fifth or the defendant does not take the stand, then I am not allowed to draw any inferences based on that.

Otherwise, I can draw any conclusion I want.

I'm sorry, Senator Hatch, but the fact that Ms. Goodling is pleading the fifth implies that a crime has been committed and that she could be implicated in it. That is a reasonable inference for me to draw.
