2. Sampson was talking about meetings at the WH
He kept saying he would meet with Miers and someone else - not Rove - on an ad hoc basis, after a certain recurring scheduled weekly meeting at the WH, and they would discuss which attorneys to shit can - oh, sorry - which attorneys would resign. Maybe he wasn't supposed to talk about that?

right after that, the GOP shut it down.

22. I think Sampson's remark about the "schedule of Principals"
would cause meeting times to shift is going to be a problem when a Dem Senator gets the floor again. Who are the Principals?

35. I think it was the principals at the meeting BEFORE the ad hoc "who should we fire" mtgs
What did he say they were? Attorney policy meetings or something that sounded fairly innocuous .

50. The question is "Who are the principals?" that Sampson
was referring to. They closed down the hearing and got Sampson out of the room before that question could be put to him because the Dems did not have the floor - Grassley had the floor. They are consulting with Rove right now on how Sampson should answer the question.

Edited on Thu Mar-29-07 01:37 PM by flyarm
Leahy had to excuse himself for that vote..this is bullshit..they do not want this to go freely forward..or they have to tell sampson what to say and how to answer!!

the dems need to repeat the question ..has anyone advised you on your testoimony today???

have you talked to anyone tied to Karl Rove..have any senators or congress people talked to you today about your testimony??

have any lawyers advised you during your testimony!!

has the WH had anyone advise you or talked to you today or yesterday!!

has attorney generals office contacted you today ..when you are no longer employed by them...or since you removed yourself from their service??

just my 2 cents!! and re-posting here... since other post locked when i was replying to a post..

56. Absolutely agree.
When this went down to stop the hearing ~~ that was my first thought: Someone is gonna pull Kyle aside and "edumacate" him on what he should and should not be talking about. IMO, that weekly meeting stuff is a place for the Dems to dig in and dig in hard. Seems like Kyle might have exposed the Pubbie under-belly on all of this. Just like the guy in the Watergate hearing who inadvertently mentioned a taping system in the Oval Office. Man, my ears perked up on this info from Kyle.

Conservatives shut down Sampson hearing?

Moments ago, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) interrupted Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA):

LEAHY: If the senator would yield, and I apologize. I apologize to Mr. Sampson. We’ve just received word that the Republicans have objected, under the Senate rules, to this meeting continuing. I think that’s unfortunate, but I will follow the rules of the Senate –

GRASSLEY: Does it apply to a Republican too?

LEAHY: Uh, the Republicans are the ones who don’t want to have the hearing, so the Republicans have the right under the rules to do that. We will stand — we will not adjourn, we will stay in recess until the Senate recesses. We will come back, and Sen. Grassley, if he wishes to be heard further, will be the first one to be heard.

27. The Hearing was not adjourned(ended) but rather recessed(suspended)....
And as soon as the Senate adjourns the hearing will crank up again.

I find it interesting that Sen. Grassley and Sen. Specter are asking legitimate questions, and the Repubs file a procedural objection to the Hearing which shuts it down.

So who would you expect to have ended this hearing? My guess is Hatch.

And it was a critical time, as Sampson was giving information on meetings that implicated the White House. Someone did not want him elaborating on who was present at those meetings and what was discussed.

IMHO this will backfire on the Repubs. It will just draw more public attention. So why do it? It had to be the content of what Sampson was about to reveal.

Too bad Ronnie Raygun purged all of Orrin's
past 'bad habits' from the public. It would serve him right if stuff from his past came out and played BOO with him right about now.....and no, I won't go into any detail, but anybody from Utah from about 20 years ago should be able to dig it up. Pretty sad, but then again, I guess it's true what momma always said, birds of a feather flock together.

Orrin's 'karma' is about to catch up with him as well.

Hearings and Senate and House
conducting parallel business goes on constantly in the congress. Otherwise there could never be any hearings. That's why the damn committees are there.

This is a deliberate "side bar" by the republics to regroup.

Leahy left the paranoia of guilt on their scheme right where it should be.

asking did he not want to go out on a limb about Fitz...Durbin asks was anyone considering removing Fitz..and Sampson said he raised Fitz with Harriot Meirs..and then realized it was inapropriate

Meirs just looked at him and worried about it after he said it..and Sampson says he realized it was innapropriate..

Republicans Stop Sampson Hearing... And Then It Starts Again
By Paul Kiel - March 29, 2007, 2:40 PM

While Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) was talking, Senate Judiciary Chairman suddenly interrupted him to say,

"we've just recevied word that the Republicans have objected under the Senate rules to this meeting continuing. I think that's unfortunate, but I will follow the rules of the Senate... The Republicans are the ones who don't want to have the hearings, the Republicans have the right under the rules to do that.... we will stand in recess until the Senate recesses."

Whatever the disruption, apparently it was immediately reversed. Republicans are saying that it was based on a misunderstanding. Now we're back on.

I think this is the applicable Senate rule:
Posted by BuyingThyme on Thu Mar-29-07 01:44 PM

5. (a) Notwithstanding any other provision of the rules, when the Senate is in session, no committee of the Senate or any subcommittee thereof may meet, without special leave, after the conclusion of the first two hours after the meeting of the Senate commenced and in no case after two o'clock postmeridian unless consent therefor has been obtained from the majority leader and the minority leader (or in the event of the absence of either of such leaders, from his designee). The prohibition contained in the preceding sentence shall not apply to the Committee on Appropriations or the Committee on the Budget. The majority leader or his designee shall announce to the Senate whenever consent has been given under this subparagraph and shall state the time and place of such meeting. The right to make such announcement of consent shall have the same priority as the filing of a cloture motion.

(b) Each meeting of a committee, or any subcommittee thereof, including meetings to conduct hearings, shall be open to the public, except that a meeting or series of meetings by a committee or a subcommittee thereof on the same subject for a period of no more than fourteen calendar days may be closed to the public on a motion made and seconded to go into closed session to discuss only whether the matters enumerated in clauses (1) through (6) would require the meeting to be closed, followed immediately by a record vote in open session by a majority of the members of the committee or subcommittee when it is determined that the matters to be discussed or the testimony to be taken at such meeting or meetings

Sampson Admits He Made Call To Silence FBI Complaints Over Lam’s Firing

During today’s hearing, Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) questioned Kyle Sampson about the head of the FBI office in San Diego, Dan Dzwilewski, who told reporters in January that Carol Lam’s firing was a blow to efforts to prosecute ongoing cases.

At a hearing with FBI Director Robert Mueller this week, Feinstein said that Dzwilewski’s office had told her it had subsequently been contacted and “warned to say no more.” Under questioning today, Sampson acknowledged he had made the call to complain about Dzwilewski’s statement. But Sampson said he had merely “asked…why an FBI employee was commenting on that issue.” Watch it:

Also today, Sampson claimed that the “real problem” with Carol Lam that Sampson referred to in an email “was her office’s prosecution of immigration cases.”

Feinstein told Sampson, “It is a real surprise to me that you would say here that the reason for her dismissal was immigration cases.” She then revealed a letter of commendation to Carol Lam dated Feb. 15, 2007, signed by the director of field operations of the United States Customs and Border Protection Agency. She read some excerpts to Sampson:

- snip -

The letter (see a full copy HERE) concludes, “I speak for my entire staff when I say that we are honored to have had the privilege of working with you and your staff for the past four years. … Again, thank you for your support; you will be missed.”

GOP senator halts hearing on attorney firings
WASHINGTON - A Republican lawmaker used a rarely invoked Senate procedure to halt the testimony of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ former chief of staff Thursday, NBC’s Mike Viquiera reported.

The move came just as members of the Senate Judiciary Committee reconvened a hearing in which Kyle Sampson told the panel that Gonzales, his former boss, wrongly stated he was not involved in discussions about the firings of federal prosecutors.

"I don't think the attorney general's statement that he was not involved in any discussions of U.S. attorney removals was accurate," testified Kyle Sampson, who quit this month as Gonzales' top aide. "I remember discussing with him this process of asking certain U.S. attorneys to resign."

Democratic panel chair Leahy says Justice Dept. motivation was improper

WASHINGTON - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales falsely denied he was deeply involved in the firing of eight federal prosecutors, his former top aide said Thursday, adding that the final decision on who was to be dismissed was made by Gonzales and President Bush’s former counsel.

- snip -

"I shared information with anyone who wanted it," Sampson said. Asked by Schumer if Gonzales' statement was false, Sampson replied, "I don't think it's accurate if the statement implies that I intended to mislead the Congress."

The hearing was briefly halted by Republicans using a rarely invoked Senate procedure, but reconvened shortly afterward.

If you pursued this for 3 months, that means higher-ups may have been considering it!

:wow:

robinlynne posted this...

interesting email on page 21 of part 4:

january 25, 2007
from: Rebecca Seidel to: 10 DOJ people

re: SJC hearing on USA firings
(the first hearing, february 2007)

"just got off the phone with Matt miner on Specter's staff who called to discuss the hearing. He said we will be getting an invite shortly. Has there been further thought on the DOJ witness?
He asked for a few things......

He is organizing a republican amendment strategy so the dems don't divide and conquer. he asked if we have any amendments to please draft and get them to him. I resent him the talking points (as he had given his copy away) he realized we had a lot of info in there.

so specter wants the DOJ to actually write the amendments, and uses their talking points directly. This says to me that he should be relieved of his position in this particular investigation! He is supposed to represent the senate, which is supposed to represent the people. If he gets his words from the people he is supposed to be investigating...
<snip>

He's a f*cking slimebag. Kick him to the curb, Witch! LOL!!!

142. Specter better stop being hard on boy child. He is going
to make the Orinator very angry. Hatch made a big deal out of the Dems not being rough on his boy - I guess he forgot to give the memo to his own side.

146. Using the patriot act process..did you abuse the principle Spector asks..
Edited on Thu Mar-29-07 02:10 PM by flyarm
you are working on it for 3 months..you are using the new statutory provision..and you come back in December, in bad faith ,circumventing senate approval....

do you think the WHiTE HOUSE would not use that provision for one district the one in Arkansas ...

sorry typing fast..

Mr Sampson this is a pretty big point..this is something that was very much on your mind..

Spector..you were aware of it after it passed ...

You never discussed using the Patriot act with the attorney general.. ??

and you planned to use it for one DA ...in Dec ..and it was rejected in Jan by the attorney general.....not rejected by the attorney general until after the emails...

ok thats the best i could do...
