Daughter shot after pouring out father’s gin

Jackson County prosecutors today accused a 59-year-old man of shooting his daughter in the leg after she poured out his gin.

Prosecutors charged William James Smith, of Kansas City, with first-degree domestic assault and armed criminal action.

The 26-year-old victim said she was in front of a house in the 3300 block of Bellefontaine Avenue on St. Patrick’s Day when she saw her father intoxicated. She poured out the remainder of his gin. Her father allegedly pulled a handgun out of his right front pocket and shot her in the left thigh. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Smith told detectives he was trying to remove a live round from the chamber of the handgun when it accidentally fired, according to court records.

Smith remained in jail today in lieu of a $250,000 bond.

12. Doesn't surprise me. It's shocking
what relatives, boyfriends, girlfriends, and spouses can get away with. If I'm related to you, I can damned near kill you and still get off with a simple domestic assault charge.

All in favor of ABOLISHING the idea of "domestic assault," say AYE. Violence is violence. It shouldn't make a difference who it comes from.

9. And it's not really a lie - he did successfully remove a live round from the chamber
:o

However, I think the charges need to be boosted substantially, and I imagine they will...

45. I've had bullets go by..
They usually make a cracking noise unless they have ricocheted from something.

First time I heard it I was shocked by how loud and sharp the sound was, nothing like the movies.

13. Gin is a real fightin' drink. Rum makes you happy, whiskey somber,
and with tequila, anything can happen. Vodka's pretty neutral. But gin, man, that makes people MAD. Must be the diuretic properties of the juniper berries getting folks dehydrated and cranky.

And yes, this is :sarcasm: for those who are totally impaired.

We found the better approach was to take the bottles he'd hidden and put them on the kitchen counter.

47. I'd like to see a single thread where violence towards a man from a woman
is taken seriously. I agree that domestic violence shouldn't be taken lightly, but the threads I've seen regarding women attacking men seem to be far more likely to devolve into a competition to see who can make the snarkiest post. The thread a few days ago regarding that representative who was beaten with a toy guitar by his wife was full of people claiming that the guy deserved it.
