Bob Barr Flip-Flops on Pot

<snip>

Bob Barr, who as a Georgia congressman authored a successful amendment that blocked D.C. from implementing a medical marijuana initiative, has switched sides and become a lobbyist for the Marijuana Policy Project.

But that doesn’t mean he has become a bong-ripping hippie. He isn’t pro-drug, he said, just against government intrusion.

“I, over the years, have taken a very strong stand on drug issues, but in light of the tremendous growth of government power since 9/11, it has forced me and other conservatives to go back and take a renewed look at how big and powerful we want the government to be in people’s lives,” Barr said.

Aaron Houston, the project’s government relations director, said Barr brings a “great deal of credibility, particularly among people on the Republican side of the aisle.”

“He certainly would not have been the first person I would have expected to sign off to us, but I’m very pleased that he has,” Houston said. “I’m very pleased that he has come around, and I hope he serves as an example to his former colleagues.”

Ironically, Barr said he will help lead the fight to give District residents a say on whether to allow medical marijuana — the very thing the “Barr Amendment” denied them in 1998. He will lobby for the rights of states to set their own medical marijuana policy without federal interference.

5. Call me paranoid, but....
I smell a rat wrapped in sheep's clothing here. If it seems too good to be true....it probably is.
Perhaps Barr has repented his Repuke ways, but I'm just not sold. Suspect he has another agenda hidden somewhere in this.

8. I think he has an agenda too...like running for President
He recently became a Libertarian, but there is no way the Libertarians would nominate someone who wants to keep the war on drugs going. By making this change Bob Barr is paving his way to get the Libertarian Presidential nomination, you can pretty much count on him running after this move.

19. He's a libertarian
He's totally against government intrusion in people's personal lives. It pains me greatly when I open our local newspaper and read an op-ed piece by him and agree with him completely.

Where was this guy when he was gunning for The Clenis?

15. He's always been a vicious culture warrior AND a civil libertarian
The Repubs got a twofer when their crossover scheme booted both McKinney and Barr at the same time in 2002--he was making too much of a stink about the PATRIOT Act. Looks like in this time his internal civil libertarian has won out over his internal culture warrior.

17. The whole 'war on drugs' thing is about as big a joke as there is...
if everything were legalized, regulated, taxed and all that, we could redeploy DEA agents to border patrol (including maybe Canada, where some of the 9/11 hijackers got in, from what I hear) and port security and chemical plant security and a whole shitload of other areas where they might actually do some damn good.

and the people know it. It's a good goal for 08, or sooner if we can manage to get out of Iraq and impeach BushCo. First things first.

20. Very little audience for Clinton-bashing, anymore...
Seemed every time some network needed some "opposing viewpoint" to Clinton, they'd bring this bastard in. Always struck me as a little attention-hungry.

22. While still in Congress, Bob Barr was warning

his constituents with letters about the PATRIOT Act, as well as speaking out against it in Congress. That's when the * crew decided he had to go. He went to work as a consultant for the ACLU on privacy issues soon after his defeat.

He didn't discover his devotion to the Constitution after his defeat, he's been talking about it for years. I'd rather have him in Congress than his successor Phil Gingrey.
