Boycott Circuit City!!!!
Circuit City fired 3,400 employees in stores across the country yesterday, saying they were making too much money and would be replaced by new hires willing to work for less.

Circuit City chief executive Philip J. Schoonover received a salary of $716,346, along with a $704,700 bonus last year. He also has long-term compensation of $3 million in stock awards and $340,000 in underlying options, according to company filings.

Jose Macias, 27, of San Diego said he barely survived that round of cuts. His salary translated to $17.70 per hour, and employees who made more than $18 per hour were fired. But this time, he was not as lucky. He and four others at his store were let go yesterday, including one who had worked at Circuit City for 12 years. "I'm ticked off that they can just come at you from one day to another, no warning, and oh, you're gone," he said. "I dedicated seven years to them. Loyalty gets you nothing."

3. Why would I boycott a company for cutting costs?
Not that I shop at Circuit City, I usually go to Best Buy.

14. at least two reasons: now no one working there will know jack-shit
and CEO's shouldn't get huge salaries for sitting on their asses while their companies do badly and the lowly worker is punished.

22. You would boycott them for undermining America
you understand they are firing people for no reason? not giving them a chance to apply for the new lower paying sales jobs?(Mcjobs) and replacing them? Don't worry, they'll be out of business soon, anyway.

32. Because of the impact on the fired workers
http://www.mcall.com/news/local/all-adfaemar29,0,7505558.story?coll=all-news-hed

Richards, a 15-year employee, said he made $19.93 an hour, the equivalent of $41,454 at 40 hours a week. Hammon, who worked there five years, said he made $16.45 an hour, the equivalent of $34,216. Foreman declined to say how much replacement workers will be paid, saying it will vary by region.

A typical retail salesperson in the Lehigh Valley made about $10.50 per hour in May 2005, the most recent numbers available from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Hammon and Richards said their wages were based on their former earnings in a commission-based system Circuit City used until about five years ago.

The layoffs leave them scrambling for new jobs and, just as important, for new health insurance. Both are in their early 60s and have struggled with health problems.

4. they suck very much badly
Plus, they have no knowledge of electronics. Their customer service skills are nonexistent.

Best Buy is not much better. You'd think that if they wanted to sell expensive electronics, they'd know a little about the damn thingees.

18. Ugh...
I was at Best Buy back in January trying to buy a digital camera and I couldn't actually find anyone selfless enough to ring the damn thing up. I guess it is nice that they aren't crawling all over you - but complete indifference isn't much of an improvement.

6. I boycott them because they never have anything I want
and before they dropped commission, they had the worst predatory salesman this side of Radio Shack.

And the prices are higher than Best Buy

And they tried to push that DIVX DVD rental scheme several years back

Did I mention they never have anything I want?

9. That's because

They buy in volume and can order appliances and electronics to their own specifications. That, in turn, makes it impossible to use their 110% guarantee because nobody else's products are comparable.

12. I got a DVD recorder from them a few years ago and showed them a competitor's
pricing that was considerably lower and they met it +10%, so I know of least once that the guarantee was good.

10. It's not just Circuit City-go and check out Lowes and
Home Depot. Both chains are quickly getting rid of their 'trade' qualified employees and replacing them with younger, less expensive know-nothing boys and girls. Same thing at Best Buy. Just a bunch of low paid kids who only know how to punch a cash register. Very true words. Loyalty means nothing.

17. CompUSA did this a few years ago,
Someone I used to work with wound up working at CompUSA out of desperation and actually did quite well for himself there on commision, two days after top salesman for the forth month in a row he was called into the managers office, expecting nothing but praise to his astonishment he was fired and to add insult to injury was escorted out of the building by an OFF DUTY POLICE OFFICER IN UNIFORM.

Tweeter To Close Third Of Stores

Company Will Lay Off 650 Workers

POSTED: 5:28 am EDT March 22, 2007

BOSTON --

Tweeter Home Entertainment Group Inc. will close 49 of its 153 stores over the next eight weeks
and lay off about 650 workers as the firm restructures to target customers who want high-end
audio and video systems and custom installation, company officials said Wednesday.

The announcement comes two months after the chain cut 70 jobs at its Canton headquarters
on the heels of a 10 percent sales drop in its last quarter.

Tweeter President and CEO Joe McGuire said the company suffered from poor holiday sales largely
due to ongoing TV price cuts at larger competing chains such as Best Buy, Costco and Wal-Mart.

The CompUSA story is now a common one among nationally prominent vendors.
After struggling for several years the one-time leader in the retail computer market
is shuttering stores throughout the U.S.

Also in February, CompUSA announced that it was shuttering 126 stores, or more than half
of its 225 retail outlets nationwide. ...

Well, a lot of them do, and they are encouraged by our current regime. That's what I mean by "corporate state," which I do think sucks. I think, IIRC, that's the definition of "facism"....

Edited to add:

If I understand correctly, corporations are entities that live only for profit and do not die. That scares me, but that's just me.....

26. Screw the big box stores, I wonder just how long
Americans are going to place price over service. I will not shop at a big box unless I have no other choice. I go to pawn shops, flea markets, anywhere. I'm lucky that there is a real Mom and Pop hardware store about 7 miles from my house. But I drive by Wally World and the lot is always full. People have no choice.

29. No problem - hate that place anyway. Personally, I can't believe
they are still in business either. Of course that would mean no one would have a job. Their business model has never really changed with the times. They used to have a monopoly pretty much. Now, they have to compete with the internet. I think people are crazy not to buy all their technology over the internet. They should transition to that if they are to survive.
