Florida state senator Ronda Storms mockingly calls Obama "the messiah"
during a senate committee meeting on campaign finance reform. Looks like the Republicans were misleading about Obama's choice last year about accepting public money, and a Democrat called them out. It appears to me that the Democrat had to apologize, but Ronda did not.

Pi**ing match in Senate committee over Obama and campaign finance

Democrats and Republicans got into a heated verbal brawl this morning over a public campaign finance bill in the Senate Transportation and Economic Development Committee. Some GOP senators railed against President Barack Obama’s reversal about taking public money to finance his campaign, just stopping short of calling the president a liar and refusing to refer to him as “president,” instead calling him “Sen. Obama” or “Candidate Obama.”

Democratic Sens. Chris Smith and Tony Hill grew fidgety as the anti-Obama rhetoric escalated but spilled over after Republican Ronda Storms refused to let the matter drop.

“I understand that some are uncomfortable with Candidate Obama’s faiilure to keep his word and those of us who did not support him calling attention to that,” Storms, R-Brandon, said. “I can completely understand they don’t want to talk about the messiah having a flaw but the messiah has a flaw.”

Ronda Storms

She had her facts wrong about Obama...lot more to the story than that.

Senator Chris Smith called her out on it.

That pushed Smith, who previously tried to limit discussion on the proposed constitutional amendment (SJR 566) by asking for a vote, over the edge. Smith said he was concerned that the debate was about federal campaign laws and not the state laws included in the bill.

“Don’t pi** on me and tell me it’s raining. I know what you were doing and I called you on it,” said Smith, whose district includes part of Palm Beach County.

That earned him a reprimand from committee chairman Mike Fasano.

He later apologized. I don't think Ronda did. Smith really had no need to apologize. They should not have used this committee to bash President Obama. So I say good for Chris Smith.

Ken Quinnell at FLA Politics blog is very outspoken about what went on.

FLA Politics Blog

There are widespread reports of the big blowout in the Senate yesterday, featuring the freakishly evil Ronda Storms and newcomer Chris Smith.

Smith, a Democrat, at one point went off on Storms, saying "don't piss on me and tell me it's raining." He was rebuked for the language by committee chair Mike Fasano and he apologized for the choice of words. Who cares? Why did Fasano even make an issue of it? Does anyone actually believe that legislators don't cuss or use colorful metaphors all the time? Does anyone actually think that such language could actually cause anyone any harm? Does anyone think that the problems Florida faces are so minor that we should be worrying about things so ridiculous? Anyone not see the hypocrisy on Fasano's part? What with the content of his brother Tim's blog?

The real problems in this meeting came from Storms. She made a sarcastic remark about President Barack Obama, referring to him as "the messiah," and whining that Obama supporters can't stand to see him questioned. Fasano reprimanded her for the remark, saying that the president should be respected, regardless of who is in the office. She failed to apologize. No surprise there, she's batshit crazy. And remarks like that are to be expected from her. That remark wasn't the problem and, again, we have bigger things to worry about.

But she also repeatedly lied before the committee. And that's a significant problem. Most media reports gloss over the rest of her remarks focusing on the dueling inappropriate comments. The problem is that while those are sexy, headline-grabbing remarks, the fact that Storms repeatedly referred to discredited smears of the president and used ridiculous logic while discussing actual public policies is the real story here and few (outside of NPR) are letting the public know about it.

Ronda is one of the most rigid, unbending members of the religious right in Florida. She sponsored a bill that would require every pregnant teen to be reported by doctors to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Health care professionals would be required to call police if they know or suspect a patient 15 or younger is pregnant, under a bill filed recently in the House and Senate.

TALLAHASSEE - Health care professionals would be required to call police if they know or suspect a patient 15 or younger is pregnant, under a bill filed recently in the House and Senate. In addition, doctors who perform abortions on such girls would be required to collect a DNA sample from the fetus and send it to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

State Sen. Ronda Storms, a Brandon Republican, has joined forces with a top House Republican, Rep. Dennis Baxley of Ocala, on the bill, which aims to crack down on underage sexual abuse by having health care professionals assume pregnant teens are crime victims.

Ronda Dear Ronda also wanted to protect teachers from having to teach evolution.

Earlier this year, the state's Board of Education approved new science standards including mandated teaching of evolution. The bill's sponsor, Sen. Ronda Storms, R-Brandon, said teachers and students around the state are frightened of discussing alternative theories of life's creation such as intelligent design.

"The bill is needed because the new science standards present the theory of evolution in a dogmatic way," she said. "Both teachers and students feel muzzled from expressing their views."

Ronda Storms has often been praised by the Southern Baptists for her loud and ugly opposition to the rights of those who are LGBT. Here is an editorial from the Florida Baptist Witness, which seems to have great control over the state legislature.

In Praise of Ronda Storms

The homosexual political lobby suffered a significant setback in Hillsborough County last month after leaders voted overwhelmingly to prohibit the county from sanctioning and promoting “gay pride” events. In the wake of this sensible public policy decision, Commissioner Ronda Storms (District 4), the sponsor of the measure before the Board of County Commissioners, has been the subject of extraordinarily mean-spirited and hateful attacks by the homosexual lobby, both daily newspapers, an alternative publication and several radio stations.

The controversy in Hillsborough was prompted by a display at two public libraries in the county which were used to promote “gay pride” during June’s “Gay Pride Month.” After learning about the displays from concerned constituents, Storms brought the matter before the County Commission.

In response to the Commission’s 5-1 vote June 15 directing the county government to “abstain from acknowledging, promoting or participating in gay pride recognition and events,” cries of censorship, bigotry and intolerance rang out from the homosexual lobby and its fellow-travelers in the local media.

The rest of the editorial is even uglier and more bigoted than that excerpt.

She has gotten away with this narrow minded behavior for years here. Yet when Chris Smith calls her on it, he has to apologize.

She really has her nerve criticizing Obama when she has such a narrow bigoted agenda. And good for Chris Smith for telling it like it is.

:applause: for Chris Smith.

It went like this:
"How dare you blaspheme Our Lord Jesus Christ by referring to our President, Barack Obama, as "The Messiah." Granted, President Obama is a good and ethical man, but let's not carry it too far. Or, perhaps you were using "Messiah" as a pejorative? Now, why would a "good" little Baptist girl like you do such a thing? Hmmm?"

15. that little section of Hillsborough county thinks the way she does.
If I'm not mistaken, she's representing the section where I-4 and I-75 intersect and a very large confederate flag flies on a very tall pole.

There is a lot of narrow mindedness in that section and she's learned to tap into it.

Picture a minor league sarah palin with radical evangelical beliefs.

24. Yes, the righties on my local paper's website
use terms like "the Messiah" or "The One" or "Obamarxist" and think they're so clever doing it.

It's classic projection. They worship--really worship--Reagan and the Bushboy, and in their ignorance, they assume that left-of-center people are just like them.

Yes, there are some blinded "if my party says it's all right then it must be" types on our side (some of whom frequent DU), but I see a lot more criticism--and that's a GOOD THING.

20. Y'all have got to see this...
This is from Ronda's own campaign website:

Ronda Storms is a three time elected public servant serving the vast majority of the citizens of the District 10 Senate seat. Ronda currently serves as an elected member of the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners, as the board elected Chair of the Environmental Protection Commission, and board member on the Children’s Board, Hartline, Metropolitan Planning Organization, Port Authority, Tampa Bay Water, and the committee of Six.

Isn't she supposed to be serving ALL the citizens of the "District 10 Senate seat"? Let me guess: her constituency is the Republican Christian Right Winger and all the rest of y'all can go straight to Hell for all Ronda cares.

29. I just saw "Milk" last night, and it highlighted what happened in the '70s ...
... and how the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Underneath that "messiah" rhetoric is pure hatred, of the sort that gave us the bombing in Oklahoma City, and the murder of gay people through the years for being just what they are.

A whole subset of our population that was willing to support evey act of an unelected pResident, and cheer him on, now refuses to accept Obama's legitimacy (and underneath it all, his *blackness*). I'm concerned for the safety of our President, and the future of our country. The religious right will never give up. And trying to seat them at a rational table is, I'm afraid, a fool's mission.

Yes! Good for Chris Smith for having the integrity to speak up.
