Ohio School Gets 700 Applicants for Janitorial Job
Nearly 700 people apply for 1 janitorial job at an Ohio middle school
MASSILON, Ohio March 7, 2009 (AP) The Associated Press

Employers shed 651,000 jobs in February, driving unemployment up to 8.1 percent.Evidence of the slumping economy is stacking up at an Ohio school which has nearly 700 applications for one open janitorial job.

Officials at Perry Local Schools near Canton in northeast Ohio say they've extended the deadline until Monday to accommodate the overwhelming response to the week-old posting.

The full-time position at Edison Junior High School pays $15 to $16 an hour plus benefits.

Superintendent John Richard says many applicants are laid-off workers with heart-wrenching stories about the tough economic times.

1. What would happen if a flyer went around saying there's jobs picking peaches
in California. 5 cents a pail, that is unless they're on strike and want you to work for 3 cents a pail.

2. Do the math, but does 8.1 % really add up to that?
Let's not be dishonest.

3. Not surprised
We had about a hundred applicants for one position at my store, and that was two months ago.

4. It's depressing here....
Cedar Point recently announced they'll be hiring a few thousand people to fill the Summer jobs and they're expecting many, many thousands to show up......and college kids and teens used to always occupy these jobs.

5. There was a job advertised for someone to pick up dog poop
in my local paper. I wonder if they got 700 responses.

6. Proof that if something approaching a living wage is offered, people will turn out in droves.
I'm surprised there weren't more applicants, frankly. If I was in the area, you bet your ass I'd have submitted an application. $15-16 an hour plus benefits? That's better than just about every retail or food-service job out there...and you're still expected to clean the bathrooms in retail/food service.

7. Sickening
I hate stories like these, because it illustrates just how out of whack our society has become. I would much rather see 700 living-wage jobs with no applicants, thanks to full employment, than 1 job and 700 people applying for it because of massive unemployment.
