35. Just trying to be historically correct, a lot of people are misinformed about the issue.
Edited on Fri Mar-06-09 07:11 PM by Fire_Medic_Dave
President Bush announced, on August 9, 2001 that federal funds, for the first time, would be made available for hESC research on currently existing stem cell lines. President Obama is just expanding what the federal funding can be used for.

47. Of course it was. Nice to see people attempting to enhance Bush's image here though.
Bush "funded" old (mostly worthless) cell lines while forbidding the utilization of new, viable lines, effectively stopping the science cold.

Credit due indeed.

50. No in fact it wasn't.
Bill Clinton gave the NIH authority to fund human embryo research in 1993. In 1995, Congress passed and Clinton signed an appropriations bill with the Dickey Amendment that prohibited federal funding of research in which human embryos would be either created or destroyed. A health and human services ruling questioning the DIckey Amendment was endorsed by Clinton in 1999 and allowed the NIH to begin accepting grant proposals for work into the already derived stem cell lines. In 2001 Bush affirmed that decision with an executive order and supported the federal funding $350 million dollars toward embryonic, adult and animal stem cell research. I hope that clears it up.

How incredibly, inutterably frustrating it must have been for you to see that dimwit crush (however temporarily) your hopes for a cure just to pander to people who think a tiny glob of cells is more important than your father.

Let's hope the research for a cure comes roaring back at full speed and your dad can get some help.

they were presented as two different ones. Maybe I got it wrong but I don't think I did. They are gearing up to divide MN. by introducing all the crappy wing-nut issues.

28. Let me tell you about my drive to work today.
At a stoplight, I noticed an old man standing to my right, at the edge of the intersection. At first I thought he was waiting for a bus. Then I noticed he was wearing pajama bottoms and slippers, was waving to the cars and looked disheveled and confused. I've had two relatives with dementia, so I know that look. Then I realized he was standing at the end of a block that has a very nice assisted-living facility. My grandfather was an escape artist, too, when he had Alzheimer's. I called my father and asked him to call the facility since I didn't have the number, even though I hate to use the phone while driving. I checked in with him when I got to work, and he said by the time he called, someone else had called, and the man had been taken back to the facility. The road he was standing at the edge of is a major road, and I didn't want him to step out into it or wander farther off.

So, yes, I'm thrilled that Obama will reverse the limitations on stem-cell research, and maybe we can come one step closer to finding a cure for Alzheimer's.

38. This is great & it would be wonderful if this stops some of the outsourcing
of research in this area. Two days ago it was reported in the Telegraph (UK) that a blind two year old is now able to see because of an experimental stem cell treatment done in China. I would love to hear stories like this about the U.S.

49. Wow! I hadn't read that one. Good to hear.
Everybody knows about spinal cord injuries and Parkinson's sufferers as possible beneficiaries of this technology - but that's the tip of the iceberg.

People who could benefit from advanced stem-cell therapies in the future:

Traumatic brain injury patients
Diabetics
Those with heart disease
Kidney patients
Liver patients

this is just the start.

I'm really excited about this news!

40. Moran Advocates: Resist embryonic stem-cell research at University of Nebraska
Advocates: Resist embryonic stem-cell research at NU

By MELISSA LEE / Lincoln Journal Star
Friday, Mar 06, 2009 - 06:08:43 pm CST

President Barack Obama is expected to sign an order Monday lifting federal restrictions on embryonic stem-cell research. It’s a move many scientists, including those at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, are eagerly awaiting.

But Friday, a group of pro-life advocates showed up at the University of Nebraska Board of Regents meeting with a clear message: No matter what happens federally, embryonic stem-cell research at the medical center shouldn’t go any further.

...

Under Obama — who’s long promised to reverse the Bush rule — new cell lines could soon come available.

But with embryonic stem-cell research opponents now a majority on the Board of Regents, pro-life advocates are hopeful the board will revisit its policy to ensure embryonic stem-cell research at UNMC stays where it is.
