Lynn man indicted for collecting unemployment while working
LYNN - A local man faces unemployment fraud charges March 24 in Suffolk Superior Court after authorities Thursday indicted Gary Gaglione for collecting $16,000 in unemployment checks while employed.

Gaglione, 43, was out of work in November, 2005 when he filed for unemployment and began receiving benefits.

The Attorney General's office said he continued collecting through May, 2006 even after being hired fulltime by a chauffeur service. The AG's office says Gaglione failed to disclose his job status to state unemployment assistance employees. Instead, he called the unemployment office during each of the 28 weeks he was collecting benefits and said he was still out of work but that he was able to work and was available.

In addition to being charged with unemployment fraud, Gaglione is also charged with larceny over $250.

16. I loved it when people were talking
about changing the name of the city to get away from that. "Cept, they talked about changing to the name Ocean Park....Remember?

Folks starte up with "Ocean Park, Ocean Park...Don't go there after dark".

Ooops...let's leave it as it is!

4. My husband is going to apply next week when he becomes underemployed
and I was looking over the website and it seems quite the honor system. Neither he nor I would ever consider collecting benefits that weren't actually due us, but I can see how it could be done. Too bad others make other choices.

5. How can it be done unless you work for cash?
It seems to me the state would figure it out once your new employer started paying your income tax payments.

Maybe if you work in another state?

When I applied for unemployment I had to attend an orientation and they showed a movie of people who continued to collect checks while working and got caught and then made a deal not to go to jail by being in the film.

But...it's still a felony charge.

14. That's probably usually the case; however, I'm guessing
that the unemployment system is very over-taxed right now with all the claims. Hard to keep up with it - even in 2005.

The news has only begun reporting on job loss since the stock market's been a bust, but, in reality, Americans have been losing their jobs in large numbers for the past several years.

It took a market dive to get the rich media interested in everything, though.

7. Meanwhile
the scumbags who drove the country into the toilet remain free and keep their ill-gotten gains.

This country is so focused on the little guy and his little crimes to survive, meanwhile we let the biggies go because they resemble royalty to some.

11. My thoughts exactly. I want to say, "Yeah, okay...now how about the Wall Street crooks?"
"When are they arrested, stand trial, and go to jail if convicted?"

or that they went after him. If I were going to check on anyone, it'd be on someone from Lynn ha ha. Hey, I grew up there.

20. Electronic records
It's pretty easy for a computer audit to match up the SSN's for those who are still collecting unemployment against the employment records submitted by the employers for SSN taxes paid.

21. The state knows when you get a job.
It did when I was unemployed. And I had to pay back some money. I had cashed the check because I was not going to be paid FOR TWO MONTHS. And I needed to pay rent. It was a weird situation; I got a job with the state and they paid on a monthly basis. BUT the pay period was odd. I started work on January 2 and the pay period ran from December 10 to January 9, with payday being on January 31st. SO I worked for about a week and got paid three weeks later (a couple hundred bucks or so) and then I didn't get a full paycheck until the end of February. I think I should have been eligible for unemployment until at least Feb 1, given that I was not getting much of a pay check for almost 2 months. At least unemployment paid the rent. I got a job and was actually WORSE OFF than if I had stayed on unemployment.

I mostly blame my employer for that situation. Their pay scale sucked in so many other ways.

23. Being on unemployment sometimes is more beneficial when it come to take home pay
for some jobs. Only thing is, you end up paying the IRS for anything unemployment you collect if you don't have them take taxes out first.

24. That is true.
It was a while ago and I can't remember the tax situation but I eventually dug myself out, thanks to my parents. Also my federal student loans were postponed during that time. My private student loan people, though, said tough shit pay it anyway.

25. I had to pay off my student loans through the IRS too.
Not that I cared...I did take courses and got credits so that was find by me.

But I just watched a guy on CNN who has been looking for a job for a year and he had hospitality AND medical coding experience. There are 12 jobs on my Job Works site and most of them are for nursing positions. But but but!....one is for a cook at KFC!!!!!
