Apologies for the language, but this really makes me sick. I had a friend who was 19 years old, who joined the Marines after graduation and went to Iraq. He didn't do it for the glory or the excitement of being on the front lines - he did it because he wanted to help people. He wanted to go to Iraq so somebody's husband or father wouldn't have to. And he was killed over there on Valentine's Day of this year. Dead at age 19; buried seven months to the day before what would have been his twentieth birthday. My friend understood what war was and what sacrifice meant, and he went all the way and made the ultimate sacrifice. It is possible for you to volunteer to serve in Iraq! Thanks to the increasing privatization of the military, there are any number of contractors you could work for--even in a semi-combat type role (i.e. Blackwater). Best of all, they don't have the onerous requirements of good health or anything that you have to have for the military--you just sign up and go!

But wait, that's not front-line duty, and you are only volunteering for the front lines? Good news! The occupation of Iraq is about suppressing an insurgency and a civil war, so there are no front lines, because the whole country is on the front lines! So shut up or sign up.

who is in Iraq. His grandfather has been a die-hard Rush fan for many years--never missing Rush's show. Grandpa served in WW II. This guy is over there for the action--the adventure. This kid has heard nothing but right wing propaganda growing up in Georgia his whole life and now he's putting his life on the line because of it.

His father offered him $20K to go around the world (for adventure) to try to keep him out of Iraq. I think Dad is reaping what he sowed as a diehard

Every time this kid's grandmother calls (who is my hubby's oldest sister)
hubby has a tough time. They are all so gung ho on the war and of course,
we've been against it from the beginning. Hubby is a psychiatrist, in the AF during Vietnam. He also worked in the VA system for many years. He knows first hand about all the trauma soldiers experience.

There is no doubt this kid will be affected--just what kind and how severe will be the trauma he experiences?

It's hard for me to fathom that he turned down an all expenses paid trip around the world in order to fight Bushies war. That, to me, is fuckin' crazy.
