* MEDICAL * FOOD * JOBS * (lost job, no insurance, hungry, homeless, etc.)?
Edited on Wed Mar-04-09 10:55 AM by ProgrezivIndie
1. PRIMARY MEDICAL CARE

ref: http://tinyurl.com/chq4dq (redirects to a lengthy URL and page buried within govbenefits.gov)

All people are eligible to receive health care services at a federally funding health center. Health centers funded through the Consolidated Health Centers Program are required to provide services to all individuals regardless of ability to pay. (we're talking full primary care medical, as well as dental care and mental health care)

To locate a service delivery site in your area, visit:
http://findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov
(I searched, using just my ZIP CODE, and found 13 such centers within 20 miles of my house)

2. FOOD

As has been mentioned... check out http://angelfoodministries.com as an excellent source for a well-balanced diet (at prices typically far LOWER than any food chain... and yes, they take FOOD STAMPS too). As for those who can NOT afford to BUY food... seek help at local churches (no need to be a "member")... organizations (such as Salvation Army)

3. JOBS

As has been mentioned... don't take losing your job personally (easier said than done). Yes, most can collect UNEMPLOYMENT benefits (here in Southeastern VA, I've guided people to "filing" for those ONLINE). But you could also begin LOOKING on day 1 (of having lost your job)... right there, sitting at your computer (or via any public kiosk / and most libraries).

Not all job search sites are created equal... some cater to high salary white collar, some simply list stuff one would typically find in a local newspaper. I've put each of these to a hypothetical test (keyword "carpenter" zip code "34232")... and got varying results:

http://www.alljobsearch.com

http://www.careerbuilder.com

http://www.craigslist.org

http://www.federaljobs.net

http://www.indeed.com

http://www.juju.com

http://www.monster.com

http://www.snagajob.com

http://www.usajobs.gov

4. LASTLY:

If anyone has more good resources, please ADD them to this list (I'm putting such a list of "links" on my home page). Thanks!

3. Big K&R!
People need this stuff.

Angel Ministries are a faith based food distribution network that cuts grocery bills in half.

If you're strapped to the point you are running out of food, find a food bank at http://secondharvest.org/foodbank-results.aspx

If you need help, take it. If you're in a position to help, give it.

well said -- and thanks for the additional resource, Warpy!

THANKS too, for everyone's K&Rs!

I know this sort of stuff has been posted, time & time again... yet it seems with each new day (in this spiraling downturn of the world's economies), someone else comes online LOOKING for help. That's why I've collected this material and posted it here (yet again).

4. I know beggars can't be choosers, but the meat quality
from Angelfood is very poor - or has been in our experience.

Their veggies and pre-made meals are fine, but the meat is tough and has made our family ill in the past.

Still, they are doing a fine service - I just wondered if anyone else had experienced any problems with Angelfood's meat selections.

6. It's not going to be first quality
which is how they get it so cheaply. It will be tough and/or near expiration date.

Cooking method is important. Long cooking is essential with cheap grades of meat, meaning crock pot if you work, pressure cooker if you've got one, or braising all of it on your days off and eating it out of the fridge for the rest of the week. Seasoning iffy meat is important. The long cooking will kill anything that's living in it and seasoning will cover any "off" flavor it has.

It beats the hell out of dumpster diving, but it's not what you're going to find in the case of the local supermarket.

11. thank you for your input!

As has been pointed out... and in my own words, we're not talking "prime rib" here. My thanks to Warpy as well, for the advice!

Personally, I prefer well-done (never "rare") meats. Even "tough cuts" can be tenderized and slow cooked to a palatable result. Using a crock pot is typically how we go, in this house... essentially making a stew of meats & veggies... whether or not we're gonna be home all day makes no difference. Using a crock pot also saves on the otherwise greater number of dirty pots & pans (used in preparing many different items), and that saves another precious resource (water) when cleaning up.

I've always been confused about how to go about applying for food stamps if I ever needed them....which, judging by the way things are going, I might later this year...
