1. Been There, Done That...
Network Hate Radio is detached from most advertisers these days...especially Rushbo. Listen to how many ads have a "toll-free" number...as opposed to a major retailer. That generally indicates a bulk sale to the cheapest buyers out there. It's one step shy or running infomercials. The reason Rushbo's on so many stations is he's cheap programming. It's cheaper to pipe him into than hire a local announcer.

As one who worked in the radio jungle in a past life, I've always suggested that any advertising boycott be done on the local level. One call from a pissed off advertiser will get a station manager's attention faster than 100 protest letters or 1,000 emails. That's his daughter's piano lessons or his new Mercedes at stake. These days, these managers are real careful to keep those advertisers (the few that are left) happy...their stations literally depend on it.

Thus, if you can stomache it...listen to the station and note all the local businesses you hear during Rushbo's swillfest. Then I'd pay the business a visit and see if you can talk to a manager. I've been known to do a little white lie here in saying how I was interested in looking in buying something or using the company's services, but was shocked when I heard they were supporting such hateful programming. Always be nice and don't try to get too specific. In some cases, the advertiser may not know that their ads are airing there and may call the station and make noise that way. In other cases, you'll run into a dittohead who you won't want to do business with anyway.

Good luck...

2. Can try but it isn't going to work very well.
Money talks I'm afraid.

Even if Clear Channel was purchased by someone and if they decided to no longer carry on his "shows" on their station and no longer distribute his "show", he would find an outlet. Another syndicator may well pick him up, he may even syndicate himself. Stations somewhere will pick him up because regrettably there's an audience for him.

Does anyone around here have access to actual Arbitron data that shows how much Mr. Limbaugh brings in in audience share in that daypart? I don't work for a radio station nor do I purchase Arbitron's data - but you might see, e.g. WABC in New York - it might have a 4.0 share for the 12+ audience for throughout the daypart, but what's to say WABC doesn't have a 6.0 share (or greater) for the 12+ audience between 12pm and 3pm?

No, only way to get the message across is to decrease his audience. Advertisers won't purchase time on Mr. Limbaugh's show if their message isn't going to get heard.

Mark.

5. I've written to his sponsors a few times. Here's my latest letter to Autozone:
To whom it may concern:

As a customer and shareholder, I wish to express my great displeasure with Autozone's continuing sponsorship of Rush Limbaugh's radio program. While this has clearly been lucrative relationship in the past, there comes a time that the marketers must face reality and decide whether it is a wise to support an individual who has openly expressed a desire for our new president to fail in his efforts to revive our failing economy. In a perfect world, the divisive and borderline anti-American nature of Limbaugh's sentiments would be sufficient justification for the severance of this particular relationship. But in a world where business decisions require strictly practical justifications, perhaps it is more important to note that President Obama is hugely popular with the American public--any partisan attacks on him up to this point have generally been viewed in a very unfavorable light.

I have always been impressed with Autozone's management in the past, and the stock has outperformed every other stock in my portfolio. It is my hope that Autozone will honestly face the fact that Limbaugh, with his over-the-top antics and unconstructive diatribes, is quickly becoming a liability to those who associate with him. Please terminate this sponsorship post-haste, before the Autozone brand can be fouled irreparably by this man. I thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

(me)
