TPM Reader BK on Monica G.

Monica Goodling does have a good faith basis for pleading the Fifth Amendment - just not the ones in her lawyer's letter that are getting all the attention.

Under the federal False Statements statute, 18 USC 1001, it is a felony to cause another person to make a false statement to Congress. Since McNulty has allegedly told Senator Schumer that he made a false statement to Congress based on information provided to him by Monica Goodling, Goodling could very well be prosecuted for a Section 1001 violation.

All the rest of the crap in her lawyer's letter is intended to sooth as much as possible WH anger at her for invoking the Fifth.

6. I would be real surprised if Leahy doesn't do that.
But does the Senate have the same ability as a prosecutor, in that it can make immunity dependent on whether one gives the kind of testimony promised (for immunity)?

13. If she spills her guts, why not?
--- We need information far more than we need inconsequential Bush operatives being prosecuted. Eyes on the prize. Make her a deal and let her talk.

7. I believe Monica Goodling will cut a deal and cooperate ......
The public announcement that she would invoke her 5th Amendment privilege was unnecessary since it changes nothing if she appeared and invoked the privilege at that time.

I believe it was a public signal that she is open to cooperating with authorities in exchange for a plea offer. She knows her career at DOJ is over. She also knows what wrongdoing was going on, and there is no easy way to extricate herself from that situation, and her lawyer has advised her that she stands an excellent chance of being set up as a scapegoat to take the blame for higherups.

I think there is an excellent chance she will reveal wrongdoing that has not even been mentioned thus far, and she knows the players directly involved.

When you work with criminals, this is what will likely happen to you if you decide to stick around.

There is a fair chance that she could be a guide to evidence that directly links Bush to this scandal.

15. I remember that. They story was told in great detail by David Brock's "Blinded by the Right."
The book that made me get involved in politics. I was so mad after I read that book..... I had no choice BUT to get invloved. I was SHOCKED at what went on behind the scenes. Britt Hume was also involved in that.... BIG TIME.

Yes. The ONLY reason Sludge exists is as an avenue for repuke lies and propaganda. Isikoff was involved in that crap up to his neck.

now. Some evangelical school in Pensylvania.

The real trouble with fundies is that they're hard-wired for total devotion, and that costs them their frontal lobe activity. The kind that might make one pause and think: "Is it OK to lie?"

Followers are dangerous. This is George Bush's greatest weakness. He surrounds himself with loyal followers. They'll follow you even when they shouldn't, for your own damn good.

Let's see if Jesus or George will keep her out of prison, now.
