His privatization scheme would have deformed rather than reformed Social Security, and since I am now living on disability, I am absolutely delighted that it failed.

His war on terror, however, is something I wanted to succeed. I think it would have had a better chance if it had modest goals that could be measured for success and had been a war against specific terrorists, rather than becoming, as it quickly did, a total war on something called terrorism, a word that denotes a set of tactics, which cannot be defeated, rather than a specific adversary, who can be.

Economically, I hoped his stupid tax cuts and deregulation would actually succeed and we continue the growth we had under Clinton, but I knew the massive deficits he created would stifle us eventually. Instead, we have a fricking mess that may take years to fix.

On the Iraq war, I strongly opposed it, but once he started it, I felt I had to hope for him to succeed. I even posted that at the time, and got a lot of grief for it. But once 3000 soldiers are already dead and god-only-knows how many innocent civilians, you have to hope that their deaths actually meant something and that Iraq would be better off ultimately. That remains to be seen, but seems unlikely to me.
