At least four tons of fertilizer was stolen over the weekend in Frederick, city police said. No motive had been determined.

A ton of urea and three tons of other fertilizer were taken from the Southern States store on South Street between Saturday night and Sunday morning, police said.

According to police, the fertilizer was contained for the most part in white 50-pound bags with a company logo.

1. This would be funny
If it wasn't one of the ingredients for a home-made bomb.

I expect that Homeland Security is not laughing.

6. what kind of fertilizer?
Ammonia nitrate could be used to make a bomb while common bullshit could simply be headed to re-supply Rush, Hannity, Coulter and co for their upcoming shows.

:D

8. Its what they use as the explosive when they strip mine - for those who didn't know it
You just drill the hole, dump the fertilizer in with fuel oil, send a blasting cap down the hole, shovel in dirt - BOOM!

Very inexpensive explosive and its universally used for strip mining. Of course you can blow up anything with it, and a couple of tons will make one hell of a bang. By the way, a ton would be a pickup truck well loaded.

10. Which of the two types of fertilizer stolen in this incident are you referring to?
The 19-19-19 or the urea?

11. I think you need ammonium nitrate to make a mcVeigh style bomb. Urea won't do it
I would need to see what the other 3 tons is before I get worried

But as someone who works for a small landscape company I can tell you that a ton of Urea would last our company about 2.5 years.
