Republicans Concede Budget Is Hard to Block

By BRODY MULLINS and GREG HITT

WASHINGTON -- Republican congressional leaders ramped up criticism of President Barack Obama's budget proposal, even as they conceded that they likely won't be able to block it.

Congressional Republicans on Sunday morning talk shows described Mr. Obama's $3.6 trillion budget proposal for fiscal year 2010 as a return to an era of big government, with huge increases in taxes and spending.

"It's almost as if we are relocating the headquarters of the economy {from Main Street} to Washington, D.C.," said Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the top Republican on the House Budget Committee, on "Fox News Sunday." But, he added, "You can't stop this in the House, and it's going to be very difficult to stop in the Senate."

3. return to an era of big government
their catchphrase of the moment. What about the use of the Government to take away our fundemental rights and spy on us at will. Seems big to me. There's big and there's big brother. Do I even need to mention the deficit Bush ran up?

5. To the Republicans, 'Big Government' means...
Edited on Mon Mar-02-09 02:43 PM by liberalmuse
that they don't want the government in their pocket books or bank accounts. They do want the government everywhere else: in libraries, in the doctor's offices, in the pharmacies banning birth control, on the borders, in the bedroom, in the churches, in Hollywood, etc., etc., etc. They love big government when it comes time to voting on a budget for unnecessary wars, tax cuts for the wealthy or giving out welfare and no bid contracts to huge corporations. They love big government when it comes to intervention and giving billions of dollars to Israel. They sure don't seem to mind big government when it comes to backing faith-based initiatives, either.
