We need to increase taxes on cigarettes, beer, and porno.
In rough economic times like these a lot of people will try to find relief in booze, Porn, and cigarettes. So why don't we increase taxes on those subjects?

9. one question
Just who do you propose to authorize to determine what is and isn't pornography? I can show you a lot of people that consider HBO or R rated movies to be obscene. Very stupid and very unconstitutional idea.

14. two birds with one stone
separate "bonuses" or 'retention awards' for people earning more than $xxx, xxx, xxx per year from regular income, tax the bonuses at a higher rate

aside from causing NOPer heads to explode - it would generate more revenue, and discourage handing out TARP money like it was candy

27. b/c I see no more sense in 'sin tax' than a shoe tax.
Just trying to point out the hypocrisy of 'sin taxes.' To me, there is nothing special about consuming these products that would merit additional taxation above the usual sales tax applicable to all consumer goods. Of course in the real world that's now how it works, but why? What's the justification for singling out these items? If its an alleged public health cost, then lets tax hang gliding and roller skates too.

alcohol, tobacco, and porn are just easy targets b/c the 'moral majority' will go along with it. that's a weak basis for singling out certain products for additional taxes.

BTW I don't smoke, consume very little alcohol, and you'd have to be an idiot to pay for porn these days.

26. already happens
There is a lucrative market in bootlegged cigarettes, brought from Southern states with very low tobacco costs and sold in New York and other places where they are heavily taxed. A pack of cigarettes has $2.50 more in taxes in NJ than in SC, so that almost doubles the price.

34. we already raised taxes on tobacco.
porn is very hard to tax because so much of it is available for free online.

in tough times, higher prices on beer means people will drink cheaper beer. Hence, the resurgance in Schlitz and Hamm's.

and use it to help fund healthcare. Tobacco and alcohol plus fast food tend to contribute so much to one needing healthcare, might as well help pay for healthcare. I don't see the point in taxing porn.
