Goosing the Gander
by Senior Citizen | March 1, 2009

Call me cruel, but the moment I saw the headline of the New York Times story, Forced From Executive Pay to Hourly Wage, I smiled and thought, "Ah, a feel-good story to enjoy!"

Most of these people have never been homeless as I have, and have never worked for minimum wage, or even less when desperate, as I have. Most Americans have never seen six-figure salaries and never will. Millions have never had health insurance. Feel sorry for corporate executives fallen on somewhat less lucrative times? Not me. Why don't those lazy bums pull themselves up by their own bootstraps the way they used to tell us to?

But this isn't anywhere near enough for me. I'm vindictive. I want to see every single Member of Congress who voted against raising the minimum wage doing backbreaking field work. I want to see every Member of Congress who voted to reward corporations for outsourcing jobs, standing in line at our overflowing homeless shelters and getting turned away because there aren't enough beds. I want to see them trying to feed their families on what our government deems sufficient for people on food stamps. I want the homes of every one of those who voted to deregulate the mortgage and banking industries foreclosed.

Most of us never shared in the boom times when greed was good, but we're not as selfish. We're willing to share our experiences with those who destroyed our economy and looted our national treasury. We're more than willing to share every hardship they've ever forced on us.

Welcome to the other America, all you former big shots. This might even be more fun than seeing you in prison where you really belong.
