1. consumer spending up= people buying spam, guns, ammo, survival gear
I went to a local outdoor store and was amazed by the amount of survival gear that they have for sale. either people are going camping like never before or else they are hunkering down.

I'm hunkering down.

2. The spate of layoffs last month will take care of those numbers......
The manufacturing numbers "weren't as bad as expected." - that's what passes as good news these days.

6. First, I'm not your brother. Second, better manufacturing and spending is good news, not bad.
I posted facts, while you posted opinion.

Reality is that confidence is the only thing that will bring our economy back. Negativity will only hurt it.

Why are you trying to hurt the economy?

7. It's not better manufacturing first of all.....The DROP wasn't as bad as anticipated.....

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. manufacturers said their business worsened again in February for the 13th straight month, but the pace of the decline didn't accelerate as expected.
The Institute for Supply Management/ s monthly purchasing managers' index rose to 35.8% in February from 35.6% in January, the ISM reported Monday. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch were expecting the ISM to fall to 34%.
The past three months have seen the three lowest ISMs since 1982. December's ISM hit a 27-year low of 32.9%.
Readings over 50% indicate more firms are reporting improving conditions than are reporting declines.
None of the 18 industry sectors reported overall growth in February. None of the industries reported growth in orders or employment. None were paying higher prices in February.

How is that better?......

"Why are you trying to hurt the economy?" - Dude, what delusional alternative universe are you living in. First of all, me posting a statement on Democratic Underground really isn't going to impact the economy, believe it or not. The economy is structurally damaged by years of Friedmanite policy - confidence isn't going to cure that.

....and I wasn't really trying to be your brother.

8. Hahahaha!!!

"....and I wasn't really trying to be your brother." So, you were just being a dick then? Okay, exactly what I thought.

I never said that it was GREAT news about the manufacturing index. Just that it was better than expected, or 'a little bit of good news'.

And, I noticed you choose to ignore the increase in spending by consumers; which could be the result of people feeling confident in Obama's plans to fix the economy. Or, not every economic story has to spun negatively.

Also, your negative statement all by itself won't make a difference, but spreading fear certainly won't help. Just ask George Bush.

10. "but spreading fear certainly won't help."
Umm, I don't know if you've noticed, but the fear doesn't need assistance in spreading. People are well aware of their own financial situations and saving, not spending. Perhaps a faux economy based on credit-fueled consumerism wasn't sustainable, n'est-ce pas?

11. Then why spin slightly good news as bad?
People, even if they know their current economic condition is bad, like to hear that things are getting better elsewhere.
