Fundies: Bible ranks low as resource for parenting
:dilemma:

from the American Family Association's OneNewsNow, the No. 1 foaming-at-the-mouth fundie news source:

Bible ranks low as resource for parenting
Allie Marin - OneNewsNow - 3/2/2009 4:00:00 AM

A survey finds that while most parents want to improve their parenting skills, few look to the church or God's Word for guidance.

The survey was conducted by LifeWay Research, the research arm of LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. According to the results, 96 percent of parents said they try to be better parents.

However, 60 percent of parents use their own experiences as the primary source of guidance when it comes to parenting. And only 14 percent said they are very familiar with what the Bible says about parenting.

Scott McConnell with LifeWay Research says the results show that churches can do more in terms of teaching about biblically based parenting skills.

"God created his Word to give parents advice along the way, to help in the everyday challenges of parenting," says McConnell. "And God's also equipped the church as a group of believers who understand God's guidance in the Word of God to help each other."

LifeWay has developed a small group study called "The Parent Adventure." The study suggests practical ways parents can build their children's faith through daily living.

10. More than one joke I'm afraid.
From what I recall of the bible, children don't get treated very well. You're supposed to beat them with a stick. It's ok to sacrifice them or at least scare the shit out of them pretending that you're going to. Daughters can have sex with their fathers if they're not sold for a couple of goats first.

We could go on all day, no?

2. Since Leviticus tells parents to throw rocks at children who sass them
until those children are dead, maybe that's a good thing.

Oh, right, they forgot to read that part, too.

3. The Bible says
Leviticus 25:46
You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

Deuteronomy 13
6 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, "Let us go and worship other gods" (gods that neither you nor your fathers have known, 7 gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), 8 do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity. Do not spare him or shield him. 9 You must certainly put him to death. Your hand must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all the people. 10 Stone him to death, because he tried to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 11 Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and no one among you will do such an evil thing again.

5. There are useful lessons in there.
One of my favorites is "The Prodigal Son". A kid goes off and blows his inheritance and winds up generally making a mess of his life. As soon as dear old dad sees him coming up the driveway he welcomes him with open arms. How many parents burn bridges just because their kid "disappoints" them somehow?

6. It also ranks low as a resource for religious morality
Especially the things that Jesus taught.

7. It's handy to know how long you need to shun your daughter after her first menstrual period.
All sorts of useful advice in there...

8. Interesting.....
60% of those fundie parents use their own experience as a guide for parenting.

I wonder if any of them use books about parenting? There are some really good books out there about parenting. Those books use the experience of people trained in the field.

Typical fundie... don't read, and just use your "common sense" to raise kids.

Yeah, just like voting for Dumbya because that's just "common sense". Global warming/climate change doesn't exist for those people because it snowed in Memphis this week.

11. I think the survey was of parents at large
not just fundie parents. But it's actually kind of unclear from the article.

9. Well the old testament is a horrible parenting guide...
Though I admit I find it useful when dealing with issues regarding my slaves and neighbors from a different tribe.
