I'm preparing some classes on how detect propaganda web sites and I came across this most excellent site:
http://www.publiceye.org/index.phpHere's the page with the links:
http://www.publiceye.org/research/directories/dem_grp_undermine.htmlI'm sure many here know about this site but with the chance that some don't, I wanted to bring this to everyone's attention.
Here is one reason it's important:
Last semester I had a student research universal health care for his informative speech. When the outline came in, it was filled with sources from right wing think tanks. Of course the student concluded that universal health care was too expensive for the U.S. to consider.
I returned the outline and told him his sources were unacceptable and back to the drawing board for him. I insisted he get sources from the academic databases at the library, which he should have done in the first place but they always have to try to get by easy.
This time around, the speech conveyed a very different message. He found several journal articles which studied the situation and estimated that the U.S. could have universal health care at an average price of around $2000 per year per person.
It's very important to show students how much propaganda there is out there.
