Young Miss Bethea returned to J. V. Martin School today.
It was only a brief item, just now, on a local SC news channel - sorry, no link.

She was very calm, sweet, and sincere. All the school turned out in the gym where she received a big bundle of balloons and ribbons, a warm hug from a teacher (or principal?) and apparently gave a little talk to her schoolmates.

This young girl is going places. She was so collected when she spoke to the camera. She just may be our first woman president, that's what I heard she has said she wants to do.

Congratulations to Miss Bethea, and a big Thank You from DU for that letter she wrote. Most of South Carolina thanks her, too. Maybe she and President Obama between them can shame the idiot, posturing governor into taking the money that will help our state, as well as the country.

(DUer 1776Forever has a post with a closer look at the school here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x5131948 )

1. I hope the governor of South Carolina received a "come to Jesus" phone call from
President Obama this morning.

In the meantime, young Miss Bethea is now a community leader, just like our president. I see great things in her future.

2. My mother was all over the Charleston public school system, giving them hell,
wondering where the huge amounts of cash we had to use to pay for school were used for other than keeping poor black kids and poor military kids from getting report cards and degrees.

In '72 I paid $30 in cash to 'rent' for the price of purchase - tattered textbooks that were issued to me in the 7th and 8th grades that my sister had used in the 5th and 6th grades in Rhode Island.

I'm in NC, but, I think we should all help SC DUers find a way to force Sanford to turn around.

There is an Office of School Quality in Columbia who we should all contact and urge him to stand with Obama - send a message to Sanford.

6. I would love to. I missed two years of schooling as a result of the state's
attempts to screw over black kids and navy kids.

They don't have as many navy kids to kick around any more but it looks like they continue practice their shit.

8. I had occasion to spend some time with union Dock workers in Charleston...
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 06:44 PM by blm
they were a big help to Kerry in 2004. The president of the union was a black man - one helluva a strong personality, too. 2004 was the first election after they were attacked during their protest - sad that the country ignored what happened for the most part, but that's the way it was then with corpmedia on 24/7 protectBushandthefascistagenda mode.

10. I remember a sailor being arrested for spraying on an empty billboard...
during Charleston's centennial year, "Congratulations Charleston for successfully resisting 200 years of progress."

A friend of mine went down there about 20 years ago and came back with a brochure for a historic church with "slave balcony still in use today." Only Charlestoners wouldn't 'get' that misprint.

4. Ummm...
She just may be our first woman president,

Nothing against the girl, but she's what... 12? Meaning this would be in another 40 years or so?

Surely we can get to "first woman president" sooner than that?

9. Yes, I would like to see her have a chance to become "A" woman President...

...not the first one. Yikes.

Or better yet, how about if by that time she just becomes "President." Not a WOMAN president, or a BLACK president, just a b-flat ordinary president.
