Another RW email. And a Reply to All.
Catching Wild Pigs

A chemistry professor in a large college had some exchange students in
the class. One day while the class was in the lab the Professor noticed
one young man (exchange student) who kept rubbing his back, and
stretching as if his back hurt.

The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told
him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting
communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his
country's government and install a new communist government.

In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and asked a strange
question. He asked, 'Do you know how to catch wild pigs?'

The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The
young man said this was no joke. 'You catch wild pigs by finding a
suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs
find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn. When they are
used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place
where they are used to coming. When they get used to the fence, they
begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence.
They get used to that and start to eat again.. You continue until you
have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in The last side. The
pigs, who are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to
eat, you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd.

Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and
around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to
eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten
how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their
captivity.

The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees
happening to America. The government keeps pushing us toward socialism
and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as
supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tobacco subsidies,
dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine,
drugs, etc.. While we continually lose our freedoms -- just a little at
a time.

One should always remember: There is no such thing as a free lunch!
Also, a politician will never provide a service for you cheaper than you
can do it yourself.

Also, if you see that all of this wonderful government 'help' is a
problem confronting the future of democracy in America, you might want
to send this on to your friends. If you think the free ride is essential
to your way of life then you will probably delete this email, but God
help you when the gate slams shut!

'A government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough
to take away everything you have".
Thomas Jefferson

My Reply to All:

This is just so wrong on so many levels. Since the '70s we've had less and less government oversight and more and more de-regulation. Where's it gotten us? You really like the way things are?

In 1970 the top 1% wealthiest people owned 13% of all the real estate, stocks and bonds in the country. Today they own more than 80% of it all. Did they work harder to get it? Stay later at the office? Become more productive? Nope, your government gave it to them. That mean nasty socialist government has systematically robbed the middle class and given it to the likes of Paris Hilton. People, meet Fascism. Fascism, meet the people.

See, here's the problem with people who belive government doesn't work--they make damn sure it won't! Who in their right mind would hire an employee who told you up front that he can't do the job, that the job isn't worth doing and that it shouldn't even exist in the first place? Well, that's exactly what you do every time you vote for a Conservative.

And it's patently untrue that private enterprise is always cheaper than government provided services. Otherwise you'd hire your own police, your own fire department, build your own highways and buy your own military. How come nobody bitches about the socialized army or police or fire department? They all seem to work pretty damn well don't they? Except the military, oh! but that's right, Rumsfeld outsourced everything he could to private contractors!!!! As a result we've electrocuted 120 soldiers in shoddy housing built by PRIVATE ENTERPRISE and poisoned thousands with untreated sewage in the drinking water provided by PRIVATE ENTERPRISE and paid Blackwater security guards $75,000 a year to do what a $25,000 spec 4 does. Yeah, that PRIVATE ENTERPRISE is one hell of a bargain, ain't it!

This reminds me of the 90 year old widow who lives next door to me. Her only income is Social Security, her only health care is Medicare and I worked hard to get her a $25,000 government grant to renovate her home because it was literally falling down. Her only nutrition is from Meals on Wheels. She constantly tells me that people should just take responsibility for themselves. If she really believed that she'd take responsibility for her husband gambling away a small fortune and leaving her so broke that we neighbors have to take care of her. If not for these programs, every one created by a Democratic administration, she'd be living under a bridge but she votes Republican every time. She says Democrats are all socialists.

No, I won't be forwarding that Wild Pig email to anyone.

2. Tell him to quit making up bullshit analogies
and provide a source to said bullshit analogy. I'm sick to death of these moronic pukes making up morality plays like this in mommies basement and then forwarding them around for all to see as though they actually happened.

The young man and professor do not exist anywhere outside the drugged mind of an asshole like Glenn Beck or the possibly pedophilic Rush Limbaugh.

6. Yeah it makes me cringe too. The widow next door really does exist.
Her first name is Nina and except for the Republican part she is as sharp as a tack.

Social security was FDR.

Medicare was Lyndon Johnson.

The Government grant made possible by Carter's Community investment program.

Meals on wheels is a private organization.

3. Catch A Wild Pig - It's True
See, I read the parable about catching wild pigs and thought how true it was - the mortgage companies and other creditors kept offering us "free" stuff - too good to pass up. They used it to trap us.

Of course, what the story leaves out is that some one had already gone out and gathered up all the other "corn" so there was no choice but to come take the free stuff or do without.

5. the 90 year old widow reminds me of my "neighbor"
he injured his back at work - (no, it wasn't just a muscle strain, a real injury which ended up with surgery...), bought the house with money he received from the company.

Pre-surgery he was on SSDI, and for a few months afterwards. He recovered enough to find a job, but not for all that much money. With 3 kids and #4 on the way - they went on food stamps/WIC, and heating assistance. Then he was laid off and started collecting unemployment.

All the while he could be heard throughout the neighborhood - loudly complaining about all those lazy people who live on the teat of the gummint...

7. Noisy outrage is sometimes a way to hide personal shame.
I have an elderly neighbor. Ever since I was a kid, I'd shovel his driveway in winter and cut his lawn in the summer. He would always give me a little money for my time.

One day I decided that he really shouldn't pay me. His only income is his pension and social security, and neither of those amount to much. I tried to refuse his money, but he insisted. It wasn't until he quietly commented, "You know, I just can't do this stuff anymore for myself," that I realized he was trying shield his pride.

I still take his money whenever I do some work for him. He's a good guy... I guess it's just hard getting old when you're used to doing everything yourself.

So, republicans are comparing the largest, most technologically advanced society since Mesopotamian scholars began writing history on papyrus parchment, with a bunch of pigs on a farm. So. I guess according to this strange-assed logic, we should just scrap everything we have accomplished from the dawn of recorded history, just so we can keep our hunting and gathering skills fresh?

Yep. You-betcha.

13. Read in your best Jeff Foxworthy voice:
(an old post from my blog that I sometimes dust off for DU:)

Memo to those who feared Obama would make us a socialist or communist nation:
IF you have ever driven on a road which was built, maintained, patrolled for safety using public monies.... YOU may be a socialist.

IF you helped your elderly parents sign up for Medicare so you would not have to pay for all the healthcare they need... YOU may be a socialist.

IF you have ever eaten ANYTHING you did not grow yourself, anything which was grown with any governmental program to help the producer, shipped over any public roadway, inspected for your safety at any point.... YOU may be a socialist.

IF you sent your kids to a public school... YOU may be a socialist

IF you home-schooled, but asked for any help from any public official along the way, or if you used a public library rather than write, print and use your own books... YOU may be a socialist.

IF you are a proud Libertarian but have EVER ventured off your own property, used anything you did not grow, harvest, manufacture yourself on that property... YOU may be a socialist

IF you are a Libertarian or anti-government voter who ever invested in buying stock, held a bank account, owned or used American currency... YOU may be a socialist.

If you have been anything but a hermit in a loincloth, you may be a socialist. If you define socialism as any form of taking tax money from people to provide people with the services and infrastructure, you are lying to yourself about how ruggedly independent you are. You are dependent on the society and the society takes care of many needs.

If you want help me make a list of groups who may be socialists, leave a comment and add to the list. It is Friday, end of a very long week, we could use an exercise in consciousness raising that could provide us with a bit of humor too.

18. I love this endlesss supply of authoritarian/libertarian fairy tales ...
... that the GOP pulls out of their collective asses and emails to everyone.

For me what is offensive about it is how bad the story telling is.

Obviously, no one in the GOP is creative enough to write for themselves, so can't they hire someone to write their self-fulfilling, Reagan-fables?

I understand including the detail about the professor working for a "large college," (and I understand why one of the characters must be a professor) but why include the detail about "chemistry" as the subject? It's unnecessary and derails the story. Maybe it was included to make the story seem more "realistic."

Another odd thing about these "educational emails" is that the country of origin of the student is never given. Are we to assume that the student came from some Eastern-European, former Soviet satellite nation?

That last detail--about where the student comes from--is the biggest flaw of this GOP instruction. It all falls apart if the student comes from a place like Zimbabwe, Haiti, Chile or Argentina (to name a few).

But, the GOP would never use any of those countries in one of their email fables.
