George W Bush to visit Europe on speaking tour

By Noam Friedlander in Los Angeles
25 Feb 2009

Former US President George W. Bush is planning to embark on a lucrative series of speeches that will take him to Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia next month.

The former president has said that he already has plans for about 10 speeches over the next year, but more are planned according to the Washington Speakers Bureau website, which posted an offering for Mr Bush's speeches on January 29th – just one week after he left the White House.

His first speech is due to take place in a convention centre in Calgary, Alberta on March 17th and is being promoted as "A conversation with George W. Bush". The organisers have insisted that the two-hour speech will be closed to the press.

The brochure promoting the Presidential event states: "President during a period of great consequence, George W. Bush shares thoughts on his eight momentous years in the Oval Office and discusses the challenges facing the world in the 21st century."

According to the Washington Speakers Bureau website, which also represents the former first lady, Laura Bush, Tony Blair, and the younger brother of the former president, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush: "President George W. Bush served in the Oval Office for eight of the most consequential years in American history. "

It goes on: "Faced with challenges from a terrorist attack to a global financial crisis, he made difficult decisions that will shape the nation's course and world affairs for decades to come. His leadership after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, was an inspiration to millions of Americans. His policies, while controversial at times, kept the country safe for more than seven years and liberated more than 50 million people from tyranny."

Maybe he will have a chance to speak here.

5. He might want to watch out for his arrest for 'war crimes' in Europe ....
Wouldn't that be ironic that Bush would waltz right into the hands of those who could put him on trial for war crimes?

8. Germany's Constitution features a "universal jurisdiction" clause in it relating to War Crimes.
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 12:51 AM by Selatius
Basically, if the nation in question will not prosecute its own for suspected war crimes, then Germany's courts automatically gain jurisdiction even if the crimes did not happen on German soil. Ironically, this clause was written into the German Federal Constitution at the end of the last world war by the United States and Allies.

If he goes to Germany, he would be wise to tread lightly unless he wants to be arrested and prosecuted for war crimes and crimes against the peace.
