trying to pour more salt in the wounds gained from the gangup - OR to point out the absurdity of the gangup. Seems to me it is a reference is used when folks are in a "relish the snarky" mood. Usually this tone is reserved for freeps (ala "hugh", "moran" etc.) - but in this case it is about the lounge. Just my opinion - feel free to disagree and all that.
add to the end of that statement "at another person's expense" thus the 'snarkiness'. I believe there were some very hard feelings generated from that gangup. The glee at replaying it - "for fun" - leaves me a little cool. But that's just me.
I believe there were - which is the only reason I have a less than enthusiastic reaction - but at the same time I *do get* the anti chain (esp in light of great cusine city) sentiments.
Given that I think you are now in my neck of the woods you might appreciate this story. I grew up in Indiana, went to college in Indiana and back then "ethnic" food was mostly "Taco Bell". I lived in DC after graduating from college - in my first year out, my folks came to visit (both have lived in DC - one for a great part of her life) - and when it came to choosing a place to eat I ruled out almost every ethnic option except Italian (the only thing I had experienced). They lectured me about my closed mindedness (and they were right) in light of the incredible options - but relented as they wanted me to eat (and I was a picky eater as well as an unadventurous one). Thankfully in my second year in DC I was introduced to Thai food and found *gasp* I loved it... then all bets were off. Glad that I had a couple of years of great eating in a city with an amazing array of multinational(?) food.
By the time I returned to Indiana (after later living in the SF Bay Area) - some really great ethnic food had finally arrived in Hoosier land. I can even get Mongolia BBQ (YEA!) in both B-ton and Indy. If I moved back here and it was 20 years ago - I would go nuts over the bland food. Not sure if the great flavors have reached the part of hoosier land where you now are located - but I hope so. If not - come visit B-ton or Indy.
Just to redeem myself, two days later we did find a little out of the way place and had the best pizza I ever had in my life. Rest of the food was great, too. We ate and ate and ate and ate. No shortage of food or wine. :hi:
is that the thread - and the multitude of ongoing references - feel like a pile on. Never really appreciated most pileons of allies. I would hate if I made a faux pas and had it become the ongoing butt of the joke that never ended.
On edit : there is a difference between getting a series of flames/responses to a single post (which has happened to many of us) vs. becoming the butt of jokes on infinitum - that is when it is a tad bit unpleasant - even for some observers let alone the target.
A big mac was 45 francs at the time which was about 5 bucks, IIRC. If we had ate at McD's it would have cost us almost 50 bucks for the four of us. We said no way and paid not much more than that for a good meal and some wine at a bistro.
then made him go with us into bakery after bakery looking for a dish my mother could get frequently 40 years ago, but is only now common in the countryside (no longer common). But we had to find it for her - and found about 4 different variations til we found the real thing that touched her pallette and memory.
We landed in London, and immediately got on a train to Reading. We met up with some people and then my friend and I ate at a Burger King. Seriously we were exhausted and hungry and it was the first place we saw. We didn't want to go to a sit down place and have to wait and order and the whole ordeal.
Then we met back up with some people and went to a pub, where I proceeded to fall asleep at the table. :)
I guess if I was visiting NY, I wouldn't eat at the Olive Garden since there's plenty of them here. I think their food is good. Some of those posters act like they were talking about Denny's or something.
31. Just another food war (remember the LOCKED chicken thread?)
Apparently some people think that Olive Garden serves "real" Italian food, instead of the common thinking that it;s just a step up from "fast food" a la Italiano :)
Kind of like Weinershcnitzel is to true german food :)
29. Over the years I have been a "denizen" of both forums
and at different points in time one or the other is "scarier" than the other. Flips from time to time. All a matter of shifting group dynamics. There was a time that GD drove me absolutely nuts and the lounge as a better experience. Then for awhile it flipped. But both are equally vulnerable to ridiculous flame wars.
snarky lounge = jest (as one is as hardened to flame wars as GD); share your life lounge = venting frustration (expressed as fear) per the heat in GD (as one is used to more civility). The lounge has oscilated over the years - snarky and share your life always co-exist - but which is dominant sets the tone.
beyond elitism into 'enjoy the snark at anothers' expense'. Not one of the highlights of DU, imo.
Sadly I think many of those enjoying the ongoing references missed the pileon at the beginning are perpetuating an ongoing pileone - often without even realizing it.
There are things I have loved about the lounge over the years - and there are things I have found quite less than embraceable. Olive Garden references long after the initial discussion... fit into the latter catagory.
