2. No way is that house worth only $26,000.00.
Edited on Fri Jan-26-07 09:03 PM by ocelot
It's nothing fancy, but at least in my city it would go for upwards of $250,000.00.

43. not everyone lives in your town
a person could probably get two houses for $26,000 in Russell, Ks or heck, right here in my town on Osage St. I remember for a fact that I looked at a couple $13,000 houses when I was house hunting. The neighborhoods were kinda scary and packed in for my tastes.

Here in the northwest suburbs of Detroit, we have many houses IDENTICAL to that.
It's a pretty standard plan that was built in the late 40s and early 50s ... part of the post-WW2 GI Bill housing boom. In Berkley (adjacent to Royal Oak) where I went to grade school, that house would go for approximately $175,000-$200,000 depending on condition and upgrades. Berkley, except for mixed soning highways, is fairly uniform in housing prices and has become a preferred residential community - good schools and decent civic/commercial policies. Solidly middle class, it's low end white collar and upper end blue collar. In parts of Royal Oak and Madison Heights where there are IDENTICAL houses, it'd go anywhere from $130,000 to $180,000, depending on the neighborhood and its condition. Those cities are more variable and heterogeneooous.

Now, this is Oakland County. It's one of the wealther counties in the country, despite Michigan's economic woes. Thus, housing isn't falling quite as fast, but it's been on the decine for about 18 months. Prices are down about 10% (+/-some) from the highs.

7. $26,000 is the assessed price for tax purposes.
In real life, it has nothing to do with a potential market sale price. Since I am unfamiliar with Cleveland residential real estate, I could not put a potential value on it for selling. But it is worth more than $26,000 on the open market.

LOL. That's a normal house. Worth more than $26K but probably under $200K. Cleveland RE has been a little slow because it's a rust belt state.

BTW, I'm not a Kucinich fan.

Maybe we all could settle on something in-between Edwards' and Kucinich's places.

26. I see that pic and think
Does no one use the front door, it's not shoveled off, & no visible walkway leading up to it. The driveway looks more like a cross country ski trail. And why is that basketball hoop up? There is no place to dribble.

It is a nice looking place to raise a family though.

However, you know damn well that if they hadn't had the Scream to work with, at some point in 2004 the media goofballs would have shown this picture on TV every 2 minutes, and cited these things as reasons Dean is unfit to be president.

34. I have a very vivid memory of one "piece" (I mean that in every sense of the word) on MSNBC
during the '04 primaries, before I swore off cable "news" for good...

The brunette anchorbot was, like, "after the break, we'll show you what Dennis Kucinich keeps in his campaign suite".. They built it up like it was gonna be really freaky deaky- who knows, gay porn? Turns out he had a cooler with -get this- vegan sandwiches! Tofu, wheat bread, vegetarian sushi (!!!) and something called ..... tempeh? :eyes:

"You ever heard of tempeh, Chip? No, we don't have anything like that at the local gas-n'-go... Sounds, uh............. tasty"

I was like, I'm not vegan, but what fucking year is this? Where people think eating fucking tofu or tempeh is, like, sooooooooooooo out there!- Yeah, he just landed in his spacecraft from Zeta Reticuli with cucumber and seaweed rolls. Weirdo!

28. $26k
Edited on Fri Jan-26-07 10:32 PM by fujiyama
I really doubt that. My parents spent ~$75k in a decent suburb of SE MI, around 20 years ago. Now, it's appraised at around $180k. Granted, the economy in this area is shit, and I doubt it'll sell right away, but I doubt $26 thousand is enough to buy a house in a trailer park.

That house, even in the lowest priced real estate areas will be worth around 80 grand. Ohio, like MI has taken a hit with the economy, but I'd seriously be surprised if you could find an actual house that cheap.

Either way, it's obvious he doesn't have tons of money and hasn't lived extravagantly. He's the closest to anyone running of living a middle class lifestyle. He's not my candidate, but he seems like genuinely decent guy and probably understands the concerns of working class people quite well in his area. He doesn't live in a nice gated community off in the suburbs (nothing really wrong with that either though as far as I'm concerned).

I also have to say I love his quote about ownership. When Bush talks about an ownership society, he speaks of the rich basically owning everything and everybody for that matter. With Kucinich you get a real sense of sincerity.

I get what you're saying, if he lives in such a grand house, he's screwn in his efforts to get elected for anything in the future. But you shouldn't worry, as long as he doesn't give any homeless people a handout on the way to the store, he's OK, as long as he keeps every cent he earns in the bank. Don't even get me started on that European sports car in the driveway!!

41. SADLY, This is EXACTLY Why He is FINISHED :-(
In America, politics has become an upper-class profession. You need to at least be an "honorary" member of the upper class to be considered credible.

Buying your way into high office through revolving door kickbacks by going in and out of public life and pimping speaking fees counts, as long as you end up with lots of money.

Otherwise you are considered a "washout" by virtue of not having been able to profit off of your political career. That is how most journalists see it.

Merely being upper-middle-class by virtue of academia or other profession doesn't cut it, unless you make lots of money.

In 2004, I remember reading that he had a net worth of $45,000. I just wonder how a US Representative who makes $160,000 a year has such a low net worth? Is he giving the bulk of his income to Greenpeace? Siriusly though, it does not seem to speak for good financial management.
