Woman Purchases Over $1,000 Worth Of Tainted Pet Food To Dump

March 22, 2007 7:23 p.m. EST

Shaveta Bansal - All Headline News Staff Writer
Beaufort, SC (AHN) - Margaret Trask, apparently an ardent animal lover, went on a shopping spree and bought more than $1,000 worth of potentially tainted pet food from her local Wal-Mart store only to dump it all. Trask's efforts were aimed at preventing the several animals that might have fallen sick or even died after eating the food recalled by its manufacturers.

Canadian company Menu Foods began a voluntary recall of wet pet foods last weekend after reports of animals suffering kidney failure after eating the now recalled food emerged, according to The Beaufort Gazette.

After hearing the recall, Trask followed her conscience and went to her local Wal-Mart store and filled a shopping cart full of canned pet food.

She returned Wednesday morning to buy more food, but on her third trip that night store officials asked her to leave.

"They said they were going to call the police if I didn't leave," Trask told The Beaufort Gazette said. "They wouldn't let me buy the food because they said they knew what I was going to do with it ... All these brands should be off the shelves until they know what's going on -- these people just don't care."

To bring more awareness on the recall, Trask has also placed ads in the Classifieds sections of two local newspapers outlining a list of all recalled food brands.

Now, this is another reason why I will have nothing to do with Walmart. Sam's Walmart was good, but his successors are evil and self serving.

1. Why should Walmart care who buys their merchandise?
They're getting their 30 pieces of gold, does it matter who gives it to them?

11. Or what they do with the merchandise once they've bought it?
What business is it of Walmart's if the food gets thrown out, made into a sculpture, used as fertilizer, or whatever as long as they get their money?

2. Hell, this woman just did a public service, and should be compensated...
for the time and money she put in. Unfortunately, I'm broke, otherwise I would chip in.

6. Thank you. "She said store employees were taking some of the food off the shelves."
Sounds like they are removing it themselves now. I did a search and couldn't find any stories, thanks for the link.

4. That reaction is unbelievable. The idiots at Walmart need to be sued if anyone buying
dog or cat food which injures their gets a can from them. Walmart should have removed those cans immediately. The supplier would have refunded their money since they are so greedy. I would have let them call the police. What could she possibly be charged with> Oh, I know...making Walmart look like scum!

7. hmmmm
Wal-Mart is the only store here for 40 miles, except for one grocery store. I was in there this morning and I looked at the cat food shelves, All of the canned pet foods were well stocked. I didn't know which brands were safe, but guessed that it couldn't be all of them. Have they already released "new" food? No signs anywhere about the massive recall. I try to go there as little as possible, but I may go back tomorrow and see if they have wet foods on the list.

15. I never saw Purina on the list
my cat is already sick with kidney disease, and I lost 2 a few yrs ago. This has been a problem going on for a long time. The cost to save your beloved friend, now I feed her Fancy Feast and cook for her.
But she doesn't have much time, I have to give her subcutaneous fluids every day.
I love her and know I'm going to lose her just like my others. But she's happy so I take care of her.

Goddam corporate America, and I'll tell ya, it will be a cold day in hell before I ever go to a Walmart, I don't give a damn about the drive, they are Slime!

Now they have the super stores, which was stopped in my town, so the naive and stupid go to the super stores so that they can feed rat poison to their families.

As far as product safety and government control, this is their way of population control.

16. Wishing you the best with your kitty. I had 2 cats die from kidney failure and
Edited on Mon Mar-26-07 05:22 PM by OmmmSweetOmmm
my dog had it too, although she died after an operation for a mouth tumor. I gave one of my cats and my dog the water treatment every day and they both lived well beyond the vets' expectations.

My present kitty is finicky and will only eat 3 types of fancy feast, friskies chicken and fresh cooked chicken and turkey. When I went to Petsmart today a few of the clerks were so happy that I didn't feed the recalled brands to her. They have worked a lot of overtime clearing the shelves.
They have luckily not heard of any customers with sick pets.

In this corporate world, the goal is a large bottom line and we the people and our beloved companions are victims of this corporate greed.

8. Something smells like rotten pet food. It's obvious to me that she wanted to be a party
to any lawsuits against Wal-Mart and its providers. Why didn't she ask to speak to the manager, and insist that the pet food be removed from the shelves?

10. there has to be another side of this, because it just doesn't make sense
it just sounds so damn odd. Like a store would stop someone from buying thousands of dollars of tainted pet food just because they knew she was going to destroy it...

13. For all they knew...
she could have been buying it up to poison lots of animals. The big question in my mind is that if Walmart knew that this stuff was no good, why the hell was it even available to buy in the first place? Once they found out it was no good, they should have pulled it all off the shelves rather than argue with the woman about what she wanted it for.

14. that's definately an important question that shouldn't be overlooked
but yeah, like you said, maybe they thought she was buying it BECAUSE it was poison... who knows.

12. I'd have bought the food, taken the receipt and called the media.
Fucking buried WalMart in the eyes of dog/cat lovers everywhere. That is, of course, if the media took the story.

That she'd go public with the info that they were still selling tainted food.

18. We need a good pro bono lawyer to go with her...
and the next time they say they'll try to arrest her, then have the lawyer say to them, "Hey yeah, bring the police here. Then it'll make it easier for us to make a citizen's arrest with their witness of YOU selling food you shouldn't be that should be off of your shelves!"

19. Walmart gets more money from screwing people over.
Well intentioned, but Walmart should refund her money for the bad merchandice.

In fact she is totally within her rights to return the bad pet food once it's recalled and get a refund. I hope she does.
