18. The only problem I see is a "class" conflict
Thompson got busted for carrying a gun. But the gun is Webb's and Webb is allowed to carry a gun, like any other senator.

If that's the case, Thompson should be cleared quickly, as he was just carrying Webb's bags.

The only "problem" here is that the right to carry a gun is reserved only for the "elites". Common folks don't get those special rights.

5. According to Sludge he was carrying the gun for Webb
SENATE STAFFER BUSTED FOR CARRYING WEBB'S LOADED GUN: Phillip Thompson, executive assistant to Senator James Webb (D-VA ), has been arrested by Capitol Hill Police on Monday for 'inadvertently' holding the senator's loaded gun, according to a person close to the investigation. A Senate staffer reports that Thompson was arrested for carrying the gun in a bag through security at the Russell Senate Office building while the Senator was parking his car. Thompson was booked for carrying a pistol without a license (CPWL) and for possessing unregistered ammunition. According to congressional rules, congressmen and senators, not staff, are allowed to have a gun on federal property. Developing...

Ok, let's see the Repukes make an issue out of this. About all they could say IMHO is that Webb should be carrying his own damn gun!

15. I doubt it.
People who want restrictions on handguns would want the rules to apply for Dems or Cons or anyone.

The pro-gun Cons always say Dems want to take gun rights away, but here's a Dem carrying a gun. That will not compute to the Cons.

9. Those damn Democrats and their love of guns!
It'll be the ruin of this great nation of ours one day, mark my words!

I'm wonder how long it will take them before the GOP realizes this blows their stereotype of Dems out of the water, and they'd be better off if they let this one fade away.

Assuming they have licenses to carry, I wonder how many of them are packing?

23. An overwhelming majority of D.C. residents disagree with you.
Of course, you are probably much wiser than they, and should be engaged to tell them how they should think.

P.S. I live in Virginia. I hunt, and I own long guns and hand guns. But fuck anyone who wants to tell the residents of the District of Columbia what they ought to do.

10. This is such a transparent deflective issue.. HEY! LOOK OVER HERE!
With all the heat on the pugnacious ones, they have to try to change the big news story to something sensational. This is such a total non-issue. The guy was carrying Webb's bags while Webb parked his car. It probably didn't dawn on either one of them that the gun was even in there.

Edited on Mon Mar-26-07 03:27 PM by Javaman
Not the brightest thing in the world to do. regardless if it was in his luggage or not.

We would scream to high heaven if a repuke did this.

bringing a fire arm into a gov't building is against the law. period.

on edit: it was also unlicensed and had unregistered ammo. not very bright at all.

I don't care who you are, you don't forget you have a pistol with you, whether or not it's in your luggage.

20. I'm with you
This is like getting caught trying to carry it onto an airplane. There are some places guns absolutely do not belong, outside of legitimate law enforcement: Congress, airports and airlines, hospitals, most workplaces, etc. My house too.

What the hell is unregistered ammo? Did I miss something? Does DC require you register ammo?
