Screw Katie Couric
"You're putting your work first, and your family second."

Did she really say that? There are many of us who do actually care about our careers and work.

What a piece of utter garbage.

1. Why didn't Katie quit while her husband was sick?
And after he died, why didn't she quit to stay home with her children?

The arrogance.

4. republicon propaganda stooges like Couric are hypocrites
Edited on Mon Mar-26-07 08:33 AM by SpiralHawk
Check the record. All hypocrites.

Her intimate pal radical rightwing demagogue Rush Limbaugh loves to Boost the idea of war,
while collecting his Multi-million dollar pay check for fleecing the working stiff rubes.

But when he had his chance, he Chickenhawked out -- claiming a deferment because of his anal pimples. Typical republicon. Typical hypocrite.

Just like republicon propaganda catapulter Couric.

7. Katie didn't say
she believed Edwards should do that.

An interview is not an argument - she asked questions that, frankly, people in America ARE asking. She did a fine job.

10. So you think
nobody in America wondered about that?

We've been having the debate about career vs. family for decades here in the US. Why is it now horribly inappropriate to discuss it?

Period.

Work and career are unimportant, useless crap when put in context of family.

27. So you're saying that a family might need
you to work? Well, that's a lot different than saying that work needs you more than your family.

Family first.
Work last.

a sad excuse for journalism.

After parroting all the right wing talking points with "some say...." she basically accused him of using his wife's cancer to further his campaign.

with intelligence.

Interviews are not about reporters throwing softballs to the interviewees (though the media does that with the GOPers). It is about asking real questions. If this is the hardest they got, it was an easy interview.

The Edwards made a personal choice there. Nobody should judge them, certainly not a reporter, but asking what rational led them to this choice is not irrelevant. I have not seen the interview, so it is possible that the tone of the voice was disrespectful, but the question as posed in the OP is not (it may be silly because when you arrive at that level of politics, you have somehow made this choice already).

Ms. Couric's "tough chick" hypocritical demeanor, especially that she put her "work" before her "family" when her husband was ill/died.

:sarcasm:

What did you people expect? That she would give them a bit of sympathy because of her husband?

Please, if she is not the center of the show, she is not happy. Nothing surprising in this interview. Sorry, but there are a lot of things more serious to be outraged about than a bad interview by Couric. That is just an ordinary interview on mainstream media.

22. I hated her Foxian "People are saying...."
The shills at FoxNews pull that shit all the time (just watch Outfoxed to see what I mean) and it always makes me think, "Yeah? Name three." Wes Clark had it right when he told a reporter he wouldn't respond to questions that were phrased that way.

34. It would have been nice to see either John or Elizabeth ask her
"Who? Who is 'some people'?" or "Katie, Katie, Katie. Did you just get off the phone with Karl?"

I was struck by the hard look she was giving them. Don't know how to describe it other than...envy. And then I remembered that how she lost her husband to cancer and even did a very public televised colonoscopy(?) of herself. The expressions shown on the camera certainly didn't show any hint of compassion or kindness.

24. In Couric's defense, she did preface every question along those lines with a disclaimer,
such as "People are asking ___" or "What if?"

To be honest, she was asking the Edwards to comment on the Republican talking points.

However, what she appears to have failed to realize is that Elizabeth Edwards is not one foot in the grave. She has a grave illness and she knows of what she probably will die. She is not bedridden, she is not frail, and she is not doped up to kill her excrutiating pain, in short, she is a middle aged woman, who other than a resurgance of her cancer, is in good health.

What are people to do if diagnosed with a fatal illness with no endpoint in sight? Take to bed awaiting Azrael's visit? I think not.

She will be alive until she draws her last breath, and as Elizabeth pointed out, no one knows when they will die. Airplane crashes are sudden, as are auto accidents. Does one who is a frequent flier take to bed lamenting the possibility that they may soon fly and then have a chance to die?

Mrs. Edwards has the right to live her life as she wishes -- up to the point of her death, the same as any adult. She has no idea when she will die, nor does her husband. In short, why should she stop her life's work?

38. The whole "People are asking..." nonsense is just that: nonsense. It's gossip, not journalism.
Katie Couric is as far from real journalism as Edward R. Murrow was from pornography.

32. I didn't see the interview, and perhaps she was
playing devil's advocate.

However, I hope the Edwards' reminded her that there are millions of people in this country living with chronic illnesses who have no choice but to get up and go to work each day. For them, it's not either or....it's both and.

Katie is a cretin for pursuing this line of questioning though. Something so personal is, frankly, none of anyone's business. If that's the decision they made, no uninvolved third party has the right to question it.
