CA Supreme Court to hear arguments to overturn Prop 8 on March 5 -- ruling due 90 days later
Edited on Wed Feb-04-09 11:34 AM by nichomachus
Let's try this again

http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/courts/supreme/highprofile/prop8.htm

The CA Supreme Court has put Prop H8 on the calendar for argument on March 5.

It will be broadcast live.

Cross your fingers.

A ruling must be made 90 days after arguments.

4. Whatever the outcome, about half of the people will be royally pissed off about it
Brace for interesting times.

5. Yes, but if it's overturned
the people who will be pissed off are people with absolutely no stake in it. The ruling will not affect their lives one bit.

If it's upheld -- thousands, no hundreds of thousands, of families and lives will be adversely affected.

6. Most people who opposed 8, including me, have no personal stake in it either
The ruling won't affect my life one bit either way, but I still care (and so do many people who voted for it).

13. And they will then start anew to ban equal marriage.
They will NEVER give up until they win.

21. Their next step
would be one of two things:

1. To appeal to a higher court, which would be the 9th Circuit -- not a very friendly venue for them.

2. They could try the legislative route, but they would need two-thirds of the legislature -- and the governor's signature -- and that would be a tough row to hoe. If it gets to Arnold while he's still in, he won't want to piss off the liberals and then face re-election. If Arnold gets booted out, the governor will most likely be a Dem.

Also, any move along those lines is going to take more money and I think recent events may have dried up their main sources of money. The Mormons sure as shit aren't going to repeat their performance and the people who thought they were donating in secret are going to withhold funds. So, unless they find some new SugarBigots, they won't have enough money to launch a legislative fight.

19. I don't know
What hate is carrying and taught to that degree, it does adversely affect society. Those who thing Prop 8 is a great idea are sick people, or ignorant, and they managed to pass a constitutional amendment reflecting what is basically a mental illness. The homophobia/hate that is partially hidden behind words like "family" "morality" and "stability" is an effective smokescreen hiding a very deep, societal sickness, that individuals manipulate and promote, find a lot of followers, already primed for hate.

Which is a long way to say I think in the long run it hurts everyone. We'll never be a healthy society as long as shit like this goes on.

25. A lot of people who voted for Prop 8 were seriously misled
They were told blatant lies and they were told them by the people they trusted most in the world -- their religious leaders.

Almost everyone who was interviewed by the local paper gave their reason as something that just wasn't true. The priests and ministers told people that if Prop 8 passed they would be forced to conduct gay marriages against their will, that their churches could be sued, and that the churches could be shut down. They were also told that homosexuality would be taught in kindergarten.

Maybe you can fault these people for not checking it out, but they did go to the people they thought wouldn't lie to them -- and they were lied to.

The priests and ministers who perpetrated this committed a great moral evil -- equivalent to child abuse. They abused people in their care who trusted them not to.

7. This is all very interesting
This is the second time I've posted this news -- which is pretty important to a lot of people. So far, it's gotten a total of four recs.

Meanwhile, we have endless threads about how "beautiful" Michelle is and they make it to the top of the greatest page on a daily basis.

DU is turning into an Obama fan mag.

The homphobes on DU must be in the unemployment lines this morning. They will be out in force later today. That's when you will see the "why do you even want to be married" and "my best friends are gay, but..." threads.
All the gays are out working today. They will chime in later to support this thread. I'm just home to let the dogs out, then back to the salt mines.

8. I hope to hell it gets blown out of the water
It's viciously horrid, hurtful and extremely harmful. If evil exists, you can find it right there in Prop 8 laughing at decent, loving caring human beings. In fact, fuck it. evil does exist in Prop 8.

Wikipedia actually does a fairly decent summary of the events leading up to prop 8, all things considering;

For some of us, a kick is more effective than a rec.

Ah, what the hell. Rec.
