Is there an easy, free way to convert a pdf graphic file to jpg?
I bought a software program (Print Shop 23 Deluxe) that Amazon says allows you to export files in various formats, including jpg -- but I can't find any way to do that. They go into pdf or a proprietary sig format that can be opened only by folks with the same company's software.

1. I've done it using Adobe PDF Writer

Save as... there should be a drop down for the file type.

Edited to say... I've not worked with your photo program, but in others, I've been able to right click on a file and use "open as" and open as a jpg.

2. easy in Photoshop. Print Shop 32?? I dunno
If it says it can do it, it's probably true. Look in the file menu for some export command, check the options for that. Or do a screen grab of the pdf file and try pasting that into a new print shop document and save as.

hope that helps.

14. What's not letting you do it?
At what point in that process are you having a problem? 'Cause I do that exact thing fairly often at work, it's a quck and easy way to get graphics when you can't find something on-line.

Many graphics programs will have a "Paste from Clipboard" option under "Edit"--it lets you make a new file from the Print Scrn you just did.

29. I'd say that means you haven't copied anything to the Clipboard
I'm assuming you're using a PC--if not, I can't help. With the PDF open on your screen showing the part you need, pres the "Prt Scr" button on your keyboard. Sometimes you need to press Alt or Shift and hold it down, mine never seems to need that. That should capture what's on screen and make it available on your Clipboard. In any graphics program, you should then be able to make a new file, either by creating a blank one and pasting the Clipboard, or using the option I mentioned before, which is "Paste from Clipboard". If you're just using the Paint program that comes with Windows, you'll probably need to make the blank file first.

7. Have you tried using the "Export" command under the File drop-down menu?
That's how it works on my Print Shop on the Mac.

9. The "export" option doesn't show up when I save the file. The software is making this impossible.

15. Don't save it
Go to File => Export (instead of Save) and that should give you a drop-down menu.

This is a funny thread for the Mac-equipped.

Can't they just screen grab over in MS land? I forget...

8. my Adobe version is Professional 7.0
here at work and I can just File Save As, jpg or other graphic files. I don't think plain old Adobe Reader will allow that, you need the professional version.

12. How about copy and paste?
Copy the picture in the pdf, switch to your Print Shop, open a new, blank document, and paste into it. Maybe you can paste it into the Windows Paint accessory, then Save As jpg.

I've found in the past that copy and paste is my way around a thousand different little problems related to graphics.

13. Ultimately, what you need is an image converter/editor
A program that is capable of converting images from one format to another. Usually these programs come bundled with other capabilities like thumbnail view and lite graphic-editing features. I like IRFanView.

Then again, I owned a copy of Print Shop back in the old school days. Are you sure you're supposed to "save as" and not "export"?

16. When I try to save, my only choices are to save in pdf or...
...if I hit "save as" the only file extension available is Poster Files (*.sig).

I've never run into this with any other program. Right clicking doesn't give me any format choices. Everything's a dead-end street. Yet the product description on Amazon says:

Multiple File Export options including JPEG, PDF, BMP and TIFF for easy sharing.

Can't find anything in the manual that makes that true. The tech support phone number they have in the manual is just a recording saying they don't offer support. I looked online in the FAQ but found nothing.

I bought this at Best Buy, which doesn't take back software. But I can mail it back to the company for a refund, which I guess I'll do.

Instead of saving your image, go up to the FILE menu and see if there is an Export/Export As... option in the drop-down menu. Some programs make you export in order to save an image. Understand?

24. Another vote for using print screen - but another point too
I do this all the time, and if quality is an issue, try to temporarily increase your screen resolution to the highest that you can, before taking the screen shot - just to give you the flexibility of having the highest quality image possible, under the circumstances.

It works really well, imho.

Edited on Fri Jan-30-09 06:48 PM by Yavin4
This is the best piece of software that I've used to capture and annotate images. You can use it for 90 days on a free trial.

http://www.techsmith.com/screen-capture.asp

Also, It's a little better than Print screen, for it captures images even if you have to scroll.

I used this program to create images for tech training manuals.
