Hackers Crack Into Texas Road Sign, Warn of Zombies Ahead
Source: Fox News

Transportation officials in Texas are scrambling to prevent hackers from changing messages on digital road signs after one sign in Austin was altered to read, "Zombies Ahead."

Chris Lippincott, director of media relations for the Texas Department of Transportation, confirmed that a portable traffic sign at Lamar Boulevard and West 15th Street, near the University of Texas at Austin, was hacked into during the early hours of Jan. 19.

"It was clever, kind of cute, but not what it was intended for," said Lippincott, who saw the sign during his morning commute. "Those signs are deployed for a reason — to improve traffic conditions, let folks know there's a road closure."

"It's sort of amusing, but not at all helpful," he told FOXNews.com....

and then there is this one:

Cello scrotum - the truth at last
LONDON (Reuters) – "Cello scrotum," a nasty ailment allegedly suffered by musicians, does not exist and the condition was just a hoax, a senior doctor has admitted.

Back in 1974, in a letter to the British Medical Journal, Elaine Murphy reported that cellists suffered from the painful complaint caused by their instrument repeatedly rubbing against their body.

The claim had been inspired by reports in the BMJ about the alleged condition guitar nipple, caused by irritation when the guitar was pressed against the chest.

But Murphy, now a Baroness and a former Professor of Psychiatry of Old Age at Guy's Hospital in London, has admitted her supposed medical complaint was a spoof.

4. the whole story isn't necessarily funny...
except for how the so-called "goldilocks bandit" got caught:

Goldilocks burglar eats, sleeps in homes in North Webster, Ind.

January 28, 2009

FROM ASSOCIATED PRESS
NORTH WEBSTER, Ind. — There wasn’t any porridge to be too hot or too cold, and the homeowners weren’t three bears, but a burglar emulating Goldilocks enjoyed other food and found the chairs and beds to be just right.

The intruder even drank beer left in some of the vacation homes targeted around Webster Lake and tried on clothing.

snip

Investigators said their break came when the owner of a vacation home on the lake about 30 miles northwest of Fort Wayne found Kupczynski’s wallet inside the pocket of a set of the homeowner’s overalls.

7. Thanks, and thanks all. We are ok. Just a young friend suddenly died
My kid was the only 3 the friend's spouse had for the group, so he got to make lots of calls to everyone letting them know. Not an easy thing to do at any age. Was his first close friend death also. So, I am sad not only for the one who died, and family, but for my child also (young adult child).

Thanks for asking, is just odd and sad and he keeps calling to talk. So, I thought I'd send him some stupid things for a bit of momentary distraction.

6. here is another one: Magic goat detained for armed robbery
Magic goat detained for armed robbery
A goat is being held in police custody in Nigeria on suspicion of the attempted robbery of a Mazda 323 car.

According to Reuters, vigilantes took the animal to a police station, claiming it was a male criminal who had used magic to transform himself into a goat in order to evade capture after stealing the vehicle.

Kwara state police have detained the animal while they ponder their next move.

Metro reports that police spokesman Tunde Mohammed confirmed that the vigilante group had pursued two men suspected of stealing the car. He then explained that, while one had escaped from the mob, the other had transformed into a goat before being herded to the police station.

8. Sorry for your friends loss
I don't know what to tell you but just be there for support. You don't have to say anything. Just make sure they eat and run errands for the family if needed. Your friend needs to express his/her feelings no matter what it is. That is a way of healing. My dad died leaving mom with 2 small children under the age of 11. My older siblings were 20, 22 and 24. My dad would have been 50. It took me over 1 yr before I could even talk about my dad without crying. Our mistake wasn't letting the 2 smaller children go to the funeral. My youngest brother was 4 yrs old when dad died and he never got over it. He had such a hard time talking about dad and our mother died of a heart attack right in front of him. My brother just had a hard time dealing with it. We tried to get him into counselling but he never did. My brother died 3 yrs ago of lung cancer at the age of 39 and I don't think til the day he died he ever got over our parents death. So I say to you let your friend cry or whatever he feels like doing just be there and give him the support. Good luck, god be with your friend and you.

11. I don't know your family, of course,
but when I've lost close friends, I really wasn't in the mood for distractions, funny or otherwise, for some time after the loss. Just to be supported in my grieving and sadness, or left to grieve in peace.

13. We aren't doing "haha that is funny" sort of stuff, just something to distract for a moment, then
Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 07:16 PM by uppityperson
get back to being sad. Maybe I am looking for stuff for me, since I am just continuing to listen to him when he calls, and talk about other things when he does.

When my mom died we watched Airplane though. It was so stupid, didn't have to think, could go in and out of it, pay attention, then back to mom stuff, then watch again. At the service, when the minister said something along the line of "surely she will be missed", we all had to be careful to not snort and laugh "don't call me shirley", thinking the people behind us were watching our shoulders shake and think we were sobbing. Which we were too.

Thank you.

15. That is amazing. When my mother's mother died, she went to see "Airplane!" two or three times.
And if you knew my mother, you'd know how out of character that was for her. She wasn't a person who really went in for silly nonsensical humor or sexually suggestive jokes. But honest to God, going to that movie was like therapy for her, I think, at a time when she needed badly to get out of herself.

Maybe that's a good suggestion for anyone in this situation. Watch "Airplane!" Even if you've seen it before.

Honestly, I never thought I'd see my mother laughing at a joke relating to oral sex. But the scene where "Otto the Automatic Pilot" started to deflate and had to be reinflated by the stewardess--and they were both smoking cigarettes afterward and he had a big smile on his face--that cracked her up.

Wise Old Jewish Man

A female CNN journalist heard about a very old Jewish man who had been going to the Western Wall to pray twice a
day every day for a long, long time.

So she went to check it out. She went to the Western Wall and there he was, walking slowly up to the holy site.
She watched him pray and after about 45 minutes, when he turned to leave, using a cane and moving very slowly, she
approached him for an interview.

"Pardon me, sir. I'm Rebecca Smith from CNN. What's your name?"

"Morris Fishbien," he replied.

"Sir, how long have you been coming to the Western Wall and praying?"

"For about 60 years."

"60 years! That's amazing! What do you pray for?"

"I pray for peace between the Christians, Jews and the Muslims. I pray for all the wars and all the hatred to stop. I
pray for all our children to grow up safely as responsible adults, and to love their fellow man."

"How do you feel after doing this for 60 years?"

"Like I'm talking to a fucking wall."
