Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 06:26 PM by depakid
All it does is make Democrats look weak and cowardly- while at the same time producing bad public policy choices.

A lose/lose situation.

What needs to be done instead is to marginalize them back to the fringe. where they belong.

19. except no one has pandered to them. Obama is outsmarting them.
He can say that he listened to them but that they wouldn't work with them when he tried. That is marginalizing them. A win/win situation where the MSM can't paint him as arrogant and blah, blah, blah.

Why so many here don't understand all this is beyond me. It's not rocket science. All it takes is a few, just a few, functioning brain cells.

Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 06:55 PM by depakid
and bad public policy by any definition.

Why after all this time- and after countless instances of dishonesty, betrayal and abuse by Republicans, it's why some can't understand that it's pointless AND a lose/lose to expect them to deal in good faith- is beyond me.

Crikey, a good half to 2/3's of these folks are literally delusional- or else, say and do delusional things.

25. really? what tax cuts were added?
And sorry, the family planning piece belongs in a health bill where it will most certainly be placed and will pass. Obama looks bi-partisan which plays well with the public- and he needs the public- and the republics look like obstructionists in a time where people are desperate about the economy.

Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 07:31 PM by depakid
ANYONE who, after the past 15 years still buys the bullshit about looking "bipartisan" after the Republicans won election after election while evincing the most extreme and outrageous- and unprecidented behahvior- along with very unpopular stances on the issues is- as the Aussies would say- thick.

The evidence couldn't be clearer and more convincing that:

1. You cannot pander or appease extremists and ideologues.

2. There is no significant political gain from attempting to do so. It make Democrats look weak and ineffectual. Americans like strong bold leaders who will stand up and fight for what they believe in- and this is true even if they disagree on the positions on the underlying issues.

35. The package began with tax cuts meant to appease republicans
. . . and win republican votes. And, even more concessions were made in the markup . . . more to come in the Senate bill, as well.

The White House increased the proportion of its package for tax cuts at Republicans' behest and indicated openness to Senate GOP proposals to protect middle-class taxpayers from the alternative minimum tax and encourage small-business employment.
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/opinion/columnists/cleubsdorf/stories/DN-leubsdorf_0129edi.State.Edition1.198ae9c.html

In an effort to attract bipartisan support, tax cuts comprise 33% of the proposed stimulus package. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#28820486) A mere 18% goes to infrastructure. Yet it is clear the latter will create jobs, while the former will not. Meanwhile, the Republican leadership have decided to oppose the President no matter what.
http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/sandi/2009/01/the-cumaean-sibyl-solution.php

Obama has both pushed Congress to add conservatives' ineffective tax cut proposals to the recovery bill, and reduce funding for job-creating transportation infrastructure in order to fund new tax cuts.

26. And we made concessions, again, why???
If this were any other bill than the stimulus package, I'd be less upset about that. I do understand the strategic value of offering to work together, and making a concession here and there, in order to usher in that proverbial new day where we all work together to solve the nation's problems. And also, it makes strategic sense in that Obama can point to this result and say, we offered the hand, and they bit it.

But I wish he'd played that strategic game with some bill other than this desperately needed stimulus bill. In particular, I wish there were fewer tax cuts and more infrastructure spending, as originally envisioned.

In any case, I hope that Obama uses this to promote his agenda and to point out how disappointing it is to extend the hand of friendship only to have it bitten by the snarling dogs of the Republic party.

And then, I hope he has the good sense to bare a few teeth of his own / our own.

31. Oh well...
Getting the stimulus through the House was the easy part - the Repubs can't filibuster, and can't pull the motion-to-recommit stunts they did last year. Since the Democrats have a solid majority, the Republicans will get steamrolled, even when they vote in lock-step.

The Senate will be harder - they can filibuster there, but we only need two Repubs to get cloture, assuming no Democrats break ranks. I suspect we can lean on Snowe and Collins and entice them with tasty earmarks in exchange for a cloture vote. On top of that, Obama use the bully pulpit to rip the Republicans to shreds if they're too obstructionist.

36. My thought
The republicans wont filibuster in the senate because by doing so they would be falling right into President Obama's trap. They are aware of this snare which would in all certainty label them as obstructionists and virtually guarantee their demise.
That is why Obama "reached" out to them and made "concessions" that are labeled conservative but are liberal at the core. The republicans cant excuse any attempt at filibustering; the public and the media would eat them alive!
