Al Gore testified this morning before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He was tremendous. His presentation was just as impressive as "Inconvenient Truth" (also, just as technologically savvy) but even more horrifying, if you can imagine such a thing.
He also took time to address recent criticisms by Global Warming Deniers. This was all new material, as far as I could tell, and included was some live footage of methane escape from both water and ice (watch a scientist almost burn herself to death!)
Following the presentation, Gore took questions, most of them very intelligent. John Kerry chairs this committee, by the way. He knows a great deal more about this issue than I'd assumed.
I have to, as an aside, marvel at Gore's use of technology in making his presentations. I've never seen anyone more effectively use and seamlessly integrate charts, illustrations, diagrams, photos, maps and live footage. It is a thing to behold.
There is one point during the Q&A in which someone brings up the topic of starvation in Africa and Gore is somehow able to pull up, instantaneously, maps and diagrams that specifically addressed this series of questions. He didn't even pause! In the blink of an eye this stuff came up on the screen. Just tremendous.
He also continues to have that fantastic, dry sense of humor in the face of these terrifying realties.
Run don't walk to CSPAN (or wherever you can find it archived) to watch this remarkable testimony. I hope they put it on DVD and sell it everywhere!
