Oskar Wehr (munition ship) stuck in western Mediterranean

THE German containership Wehr Elbe, owned by Oskar Wehr, is stuck in the western Mediterranean with a delicate cargo on board.

It was due to reload the cargo in the Greek port of Astakos onto smaller ships but the Greek government refused permission, following protests.

Oskar Wehr director Thomas Klehr said: “After the debates in Greece, the ship did not call at the port of Astakos and is now lying at anchor in the western Mediterranean waiting for further instructions from the Military Sealift Command.”

Amnesty International said that the ammunition on the Wehr Elbe included grenades with white phosphor, the deployment of which runs counter to international law.

But maybe it will cool some heads to delay the shipment.
