Chimpanzee earns her stripes as a foster mother by caring for two white tiger cubs

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 11:26 AM on 13th November 2008
Gently easing a bottle of milk into the cub's mouth, Anjana clearly demonstrates her skill at her job.

What makes this so unusual is that Anjana is a chimpanzee and her charges are two white tiger cubs.

The pictures from a Miami zoo show the doting chimpanzee tenderly feeding two-month-old Mitra and Shiva and cuddling up with them at nap time.

61. Back in the 70's, I rescued a lion from a pettiing zoo and kept him
for a year before I found a good preserve for him and he was one of the most intelligent and kind animals I have ever known. He wasn't as large as the lion in your video but behaved the same way.

I went to visit him two years later and he went absolutely apeshit when he heard my voice and scared the shit out of me by running full tilt at me knocking me down and snuggling up against me. I thought I was a dead man. Scared the preserve owner as well.

It is a sort of preserve in SC.

http://www.tigerfriends.com/home.html

They expose all the young animals to a variety of other animals and people. The chimp interacting with tigers is not really uncommon at the "park". They provide animals for some television and film apparently.

They have tours. My family went on one last summer. For three hours they show you and let you interact with several types of animals. They sit the visitors in a large sand box type enclosure and let baby tigers sort of free roam all around you. My youngest daughter adores tigers and has always wanted to be a conservationist so for her this was a really big deal.

Some of the animals they brought out included a hawk, an owl, a liger, a chimp, a couple of orangutans, a wolf, a capuchin (my favorite) and of course the baby tigers.

We had a good time and the animals seem very healthy.

34. We have a zoo near here that offers tiger cub encounters...
...for a nice fee. I wrote an article about it and got to play with a trio of cubs in 2007.

After getting to know the zookeeper, she let me come back a month later and meet the pair of wolves there. They were sweethearts! Jumped, wiggled and whined just like pups when they saw company coming. Very trusting as well.

I've got some pics, one of me on a knee petting one wolf as he has his head turned, big smile and that "scratch my butt!" look on his face that dog owners all know.

The zookeeper said they have to watch their gloves while in the enclosure with them because the wolves will grab them, start playing "keep away" and eventually try to hide them.

But the whole time you're with them, you always retain the sense that though they are a lot like dogs, there are just some things you can do with a dog you would never try with the wolves (for instance try and pick one up).

39. One interesting note...
...They had to round up the wallabies every night and put them in indoor facilities. It seems the bobcats in an adjacent swampy wooded area were coming onto the grounds at night and preying on the little marsupials as they couldn't fully use their flight defense in an enclosure.

38. It's called species conceit and it's ridiculous...
...I love those who say things like, "we don't know that animals have emotions," "we don't know that animals are capable of abstract thought," and the like.

They conveniently overlook the fact that WE are animals and since humans can do those things, yes "animals are capable."

That's completely ignoring what we've learned from other primates who have learned to communicate with us.

People can be very obtuse in their necessity to feel superior.
