3. Well, not necessarily. Thucydides' "The History of the Peloponnesian War"
was a pretty straightforward critique of Athens, of which he was a citizen, when he wrote it, as the world's first war correspondent. He wrote it specifically to warn future generations and nations NOT to be carried away by greed and lust for power because that is what effectively ended the world's first democracy and the Athenian Empire. That was 2500 years ago! I have not seen any scholarly challenge to what Thucydides wrote.

His work was one of the reasons our founders, all of whom could read Greek, were so concerned about the transition from "republic" to "empire" of our new American nation...
