Home Depot to close four dozen stores
Home Depot to close 5 Expo stores in Florida

From Miami Herald Staff and Wire Reports

Home Depot plans to eliminate 7,000 jobs while closing four dozen stores -- including five in Florida -- under its smaller home improvement brands as the recession continues to batter the nation's housing market.

The nation's biggest home improvement retailer said Monday the cuts will affect about 2 percent of its 300,000 workers and cause the Atlanta-based chain to record a $532 million pretax charge, most of which will be recorded in the fourth quarter.

Most of the cuts affect workers at Home Depot's 34 Expo Design Centers, five YardBIRDS, two Design Centers and HD Bath, a bath remodeling business with seven sites.

Those stores will close in the next two months.

1. The large showroom hubs looked ridiculous when they were built
I wondered if there were really that many rich folks to keep them going. I guess we have the answer.

3. Our HD may close. Menard's built an awesome store here.
Our area cannot support both and there is no comparison on prices or products. Menard's is packed with people while HD stands empty. The customer service is much much better at Menard's.

4. Went to our local HD after Lowe's didn't have what I needed this last weekend.
Only 2 people checking out, one was at the contractors area which was swamped with a long line, and the other was tending the self-checkout area which was also swamped. I think they're cutting back on personnel.

5. Within the last year,
there was a petition going around for a boycott of Home Depot because they advertised so heavily on FUX News, which of course, helped finance the GOP propaganda machine during the campaign. I don't suppose they'll factor in the damage that may have done. We got a new Lowe's about that same time, which seemed to bolster the defection here.

6. if home depot survives this year they will be lucky..
here in the midwest menards is the big boy on the block. john menard went on a rebuilding spree for the last few years replacing older stores with brand new stores. the home depots in this area are old and in bad locations,i doubt they will last till next year
