...why was masturbation more effective than sexual intercourse if purging the prostate of toxins is the hypothesized mechanism?

The answer: it isn't but the data must be collected via self-report and there is more of a social/ego incentive to say "I've had sex (number) of times" than saying "I jerked off (number) of times". The latter number will likely be more reliable.
