Interesting talk on how fear, rather than a feeling of "heroism" motivates on the battlefield, and resisting how every fiber of the body is crying out for you to remain out of danger in order to jump over ot and into action.

6. The Averaged American: Surveys, Citizens, and the Making of a Mass Public
On Saturday, March 24 at 10:15 am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Averaged American: Surveys, Citizens, and the Making of a Mass Public
Sarah Igo

In "The Averaged American," history professor Sarah Igo argues that opinion polls, sex surveys, and consumer research are a 20th-century innovation that changed the way Americans think about themselves. Studies such as the Gallup Poll and the Kinsey Reports prompted Americans to begin defining themselves and their nation in terms of majority opinion and mainstream beliefs.

Sarah Igo is a history professor at the University of Pennsylvania where she is a member of the Graduate Group in the History and Sociology of Science. She is also part of an interdisciplinary faculty group at Harvard University dedicated to rethinking American education.

43. Disappointing Treatment of a Fabulous Topic
This program was a real disappointment. The Book TV description of this speech gave an impression of a historically sweeping study of polling, statistics, and the creation of a social sense of a "normal" way of being, inventing conformity on a level not previously done, which I thought was going to be fabulous; it is a lifelong interest of mine. No such luck. I don't know if the book itself is this narrow, superficial, and insultingly written, but the lecture here on C-SPAN was annoying, to me anyway.

The whole course of the 20th Century witnessed the rise of the National, and then global, corporate pseudo-"culture," mainly commercial entertainment, and the death of regional, small scale, non-corporate culture, and the death of such things as most people playing musical instruments in their own homes, playing board games, and etc. Movies became popular, and stars were known world-wide; everybody started to have the same favorites, standardized. Public schools started enforcing the truancy rules, and for the first time, the majority of American children were educated in a standardized public school system. The great value of free education for all, also went along with an adherence to a system. If you remember the book "The Dollmaker," which was a great, 1984 I think it was, TV movie with Jane Fonda, there was a scene when the family, which has moved up from the South to Detroit during the 1940s, enrolls the kids in school. They have to sit in uniform lines of desks, not talk, read the curriculum's books, etc., all ordinary things, but the Mother was shocked and afraid at the forced conformity of it all, as if it would kill their personalities, their minds, their initiative. This was a common opinion about a lot of this, even if wrong.

TV, mass-produced products we all buy, fads themselves, all these things were alarming proofs that our individuality had been co-opted, and that soon Americans would have no regional differences, but be one homogenous mass, from sea to sea. Many articles and sociology books were written to this effect. Along with all this came the rise of the polling firm, the social study, and a new level of "categorizing" and "normalizing" of majority behavior, that many took as a violation of the private soul, and as coercion to conformity. Controlling people's behavior for the rights of others is one thing, but during the time of Nazis and Japanese brutal massacres, the specter of "mind-control" was a threat. I remember my own mixed feelings when I read "The Hite Report" during the '70s--very big best-seller. Partly I was thrilled and "vindicated" at the experiences told by women, their anger, oppression, etc., and partly I was really distressed at how even the deepest, most intimate fantasies, etc., were not individual at all, but had a kind of "mass-produced, assembly-line" similarity to them. (Extremely brief summation of this process, but there it is.) Anyway--this was what I hoped it would be about; it was not.

The entire program was about, I kid you not, "The Kinsey Report," and then not even the Kinsey report, but ridiculing and laughing at anyone who had any reserveations about it at all. People's opinions about anything and everything were over-characterized, the way second-rate writers always do: this one was "eager" to do something, that one was "fascinated" not just interested; this one was "caught" being "proud" of something, and many quoted letters to Gallup and others were laughed at for criticizing the low and possibly slanted poll sampling--even though it is a valid criticism and should be answered! Instead, they were just laughed at as if they were, I don't know, "sheeple"?, and selfish, rather than explaining. I got a strong sense from this author that she holds an attitude that I get more sick of all the time, and that is, that all previous generations were all "stupid," all "hypocrites," all always "overreact," and quotes selectively only focus on the ones you can laugh at--because you are so superior, no doubt. The author was laughing and smiling at these "stupid" deceased paople the whole time, as I yelled at the TV.

I don't know whether the book actually covered the topic it claimed to, because the C-SPAN program was so bad--(and even included a little of that C-SPAN censorship, when the author answered a question, referred to the falseness of "Red" and "Blue" States stereotypes, and--bam!--a cutaway to someone sitting at another seat, silent, and the subject was gone. You'd think it was an Al Gore speech here.)

Regardless, polling is an interesting topic, its recording of opinion, and possibly affecting opinion, and even being used to force conformity when none was even expected before, especially from the newer social-control type global corporations, and their complete, mind-control re-making of our lives and former society ("marketing"); this was never mentioned. There was a landmark social study of the 1920s+ and following the people studied for decades, known as the "Middletown" studies, very famous, and was conducted well. It was a real analysis of a Middle American town, (I think Ohio somewhere; can't remember now), with endless, detailed questions, like a Census, or "The Day America Told the Truth" from the '80s, and exposed the difference between the facade and the ordinary, real truth. One of my favorite discoveries was that, when people were asked their political opinions and they were labelled, most called themselves "conservative Republicans," yet when the platforms of Parties were described to them, with no identification, and reworded to remove identifying jargon but keeping the meaning, most agreed with Communism! Do people change as new influences prevail and become majority opinion, or do they just give lip service; so is it conformity, or just hiding the opinion?

There are books, such as "Tainted Truth" by Cynthia Crossen--a great book--that describe the problems of polling; how the order of questions will change and even determine the final poll numbers, how questions are slanted, (using the hugely important example of what was done to Anita Hill as example), presenting a fake impression of "agreement" when really people were on the other side, (and favoring Anita Hill). Most people, going back to the 1930s when I first heard of it being asked--and in Reader's Digests of the 1940s, I happened to read, (very old copy found)--both sexes, supported equal pay for equal work--this has always been the majority opinion. Still, it never happens. There are so many highly interesting angles to this topic, but none of it was discussed here on this program, with its bizarre, limited slant. I don't know if the book is like this, but if it is, it isn't worth it.

Failing America's Faithful: How Today's Churches are Mixing with Politics and Losing Their Way
Kathleen Kennedy Townsend

From Politics & Prose Bookstore in Washington, DC, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend asserts that many of America's religious institutions are more concerned about promoting a political agenda than with serving their communities. In her book "Failing America's Faithful," Ms. Townsend describes how she has reconciled her own religious beliefs with her life in politics.

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend was Lt. Governor of Maryland from 1995 to 2003, Maryland's first woman lieutenant governor. She ran for governor of Maryland in 2002 and was defeated. She is the eldest child of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy.

45. This was Wonderful, an Inspiration
This was really great, and would have made a great speech by itself. This is a fabulous addition to what is becoming clearer now, for religious Democrats to get themselves, and the country, back on track by getting rid of all this conservative jargon, and returning Christian thought, (and other religions), to its roots of justice and the poor. This was a presentation by the oldest child of Robert and Ethel Kennedy, and it contained all the intelligence, moral conscience, friendly warmth, and humor, of a great Kennedy speech, (from any number of them). Part of the talk was on the way the Kennedy kids were raised, the kind of teachings they got, about how their own privilege and having much required them to serve others, and that God was a God of justice for the poor, the oppressed, and those who were neglected. There were references to history, how the mingling of politics and religion have changed, and how now the entire appearance of "faith" has been falsely co-opted by Republicans and conservatives, using it all to totally un-Christian ends. There were questions on the corruption of the Catholic Church after the actual presentation, and they were answered honestly and well, the way Kennedys do.

There was a total clarity and on-target understanding about this whole talk, and Kathleen Kennedy-Townsend, who was probably cheated out of the Governship of Maryland by Republican voter-fraud, spoke with a compelling seriousness and purpose, even with a low-key casualness and modesty that makes Kennedys generally so attractive to listen to. She is totally on-target about what Christian left-wing Democrats need to do, and how to get the true religion back to the social progressive mainstream. She quoted Franklin Roosevelt's great quote about how the New Deal was just the Sermon on the Mount applied, and the blessings of God made available to everyone--everyone, not just a few--as it is supposed to be. There was an exciting feeling, that I had anyway, during this whole program--that there was hope, this was it, it is starting to solve itself and get the devils out; this is a totally modern, up-to-date way of telling these issues and opinions with faith, applied to the excessively corporate-consulted way things are now.

She recommends challenging Republicans and conservatives with their phony, "individual"-like reading of the Bible, which is actually just anti-societal selfishness, tax cutting, anti-poor coldness masked as "self-reliance" or a "personal relationship with God" as opposed to large-scale and social. She was great at unmasking these fake attitudes, and it sounded sometimes like Robert Kennedy again, with such a heavy moral emphasis on justice, on the poor, and on general social obligations to rectify injustice. As more and more people explain what has been taken from us all, and re-explain how people used to understand the meaning and purpose of society, government, etc., everything will start to clear up, get better, and eventually be solved. It was fabulous, and I will buy the book.

The Fire: The Bombing of Germany 1940-1945
Jorg Friedrich

The Allied bombing of Germany during World War II resulted in 600,000 casualties - 70,000 of them children - and devastated the landscape of historic cities such as Dresden. In "The Fire," German historian Jorg Friedrich combines narrative, first-hand testimony, and history to depict the air-raids as they were experienced by German civilians. He also considers Allied rationale for the bombing and whether or not the campaign influenced the war's outcome. Since its initial publication in German in 2002, the book has been translated into ten languages.

German-born historian Jorg Friedrich worked as a broadcaster in Berlin before covering the Majdanek Trial in the 1970s. He is author of "The Cold Amnesty," which was a bestseller in the Federal Republic, and "The Law of War." "The Fire" has been translated into ten languages since its first publication in German in 2002.

Peace Be Upon You: The Story Of Muslim, Christian, and Jewish Coexistence
Zachary Karabell

Zachary Karabell traces the historical instances of peaceful coexistence between Muslim, Christian, and Jewish people. The author contends that throughout the past fourteen centuries the different faiths have found common ground; from peaceful debate amongst scholars in the courts of the caliphs in Baghdad to medieval Spain where Jewish sages, Muslim philosophers, and Christian monks translated the meaning of God together. The author argues that the current state of religious tensions are solvable if one studies the past.

Zachary Karabell is the author of several books including, "The Last Campaign: How Harry Truman Won the 1948 Election" and "Parting the Desert: The Creation of the Suez Canal."
