Kansas bill would require police to video interrogation


TOPEKA, Kan. | Law enforcement officers would have to videotape their interrogations of suspects under a bill considered by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The committee took no action on the bill, which was opposed by law enforcement officials and prosecutors. It would make any statement of a suspect that wasn’t taped inadmissible at trial.

Sponsoring Sen. David Haley said the proposal would be protection against police officers being accused of conducting improper interrogations. He said various police agencies in 48 states videotape interrogations of people in custody, including some in Kansas.

Opponents voiced concerns about the cost and unintended consequences, such as whether police questioning someone before arrest could be used as evidence if not videotaped.

Well, they like red light cameras and various ways, for our own safety of course..., to keep an eye on us. Why would they be opposed to this? It is only to help them.
