FDA INVESTIGATES PET FOODS NOT ON RECALL LIST

More Colorado pet owners reported Thursday that their animals have died from symptoms that might be linked to recalled pet food products, a spokesman for the Food and Drug Administration in Denver said.

The FDA also is looking into a small number of reports that pets have died after consuming food that was not included among the recalled products, said Devin Koontz, the administration's spokesman.

Several Unconfirmed Reports of Iams Dry Food Causing Illness

Update 3:30pm: We will be collecting emails over the next few days and release a result early next week. In the meantime, if you believe your pet was sicked by ANY kind of pet food, please contact the manufacturer and/or the FDA.

Original Post: We want to repeat that Iams dry pet food is NOT a part of the recall (it only applies to wet food) but itchmo has been hearing of several independent reports that Iams dry pet food has caused illnesses in at least three independent cases. All three reports of pets getting sick has singled out Iams dry food as the cause.

We’re not sure if this is anything more than just coincidence. But, we haven’t seen other dry food being singled out for illness and we’re curious. If you believe your dog has been sickened by dry food, or know of any reports that say so, please email us at tips@itchmo.com and we’ll see if we can log more possible cases.

1. Even if it's coincidence, they darn well should investigate to make sure.
Too bad the FDA didn't do anything beforehand that sniffed the problem out.

2. So what the hell do I feed my dogs tonight?
We use ProPlan, and it's not on the list, though one of them had a little blood in her stool (now gone) a few days ago - we bought the canned food they are eating now a few months ago. Strangely, the last two times we've bought canned food, we were ONLY able to get the kind that has gravy, versus whatever you call the other kind. I'm not going to feed them any more of those cans, and will get something else tomorrow at Whole Foods or a natural foods store, but do I even dare feed them ProPlan dry tonight?

3. We use ProPlan dry too, for our cats

I'm scared too, but I haven't seen any signs of illness. I think it's okay, but I'm keeping a sharp eye on the news.

4. Usually Iams dry, but switched to that too couple of weeks ago
What the HELL are we supposed to feed them? This company seems to supply just about ALL pet food. One more reason why monopolies, and outsourcing, is a horrible idea.

Yes, keeping a very close eye on my senior boy and girl.

5. Remember...
it might simply be a coincidence. These are unconfirmed cases, and all three are Iams dry. Keep checking the ItchmoSeattle blog to see if they log any more cases. Thus far, they haven't.

Myself, I'm keeping my cats off of wet food right now. We're off to the vet for testing on Monday, when we'll pick up a couple of cans of prescription diet w/d (they've been on the dry for colitis).

The blogosphere will keep you posted...we're on it...

Take care, and hug your babies for me! :-)

My Twins say "Miao" to everyone!
