7. They both look gorgeous. Elegant.
And yet, so down to earth - touchable.

Maybe that's because they're so close to my age, but they don't feel distant at all. They feel like folks. Beautiful folks, but still folks, you know?

it are what appear to be small white tulle flowers. Just lovely!

25. Thanks!
I tend to prefer bold colors to neutrals/whites/blacks, but this does look beautiful on her. (Loved the gold-glitter dress from earlier in the day!) Someone else said it too, but the Obamas do look a bit like a wedding couple in their finery. Very appropriate for the occasion!

32. I Don't Care For the Cut, But Love the Texture
Edited on Tue Jan-20-09 09:35 PM by Crisco
I like the bodice, but I think the real problem is the skirt. If the waist was either a little higher or lower ...

34. Ha! I feel the opposite. I think the cut is mostly flattering, but dislike the texture.
It doesn't go over well on TV, I don't think. It looks like a chenille bath rug. JMHO.

However, as regards the strap and where it attaches to the bodice, I totes agree with you about the cut. WTF is going on there?

44. Something I've noticed about the Obama family wardrobe is...
that they often choose designs that move well. The coats on the President and First Lady were beautiful as much for the way the fabric moved when they walked, and when the wind met elements of those designs.

45. Media outlets spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on models
to get a few good images. Now consider the HUNDREDS of perfect ones we've seen today. :wow:

The next four years are going to be very very easy to look at. :)

46. My two cents' worth.
My mom taught me to sew. She was a Costume Design major in college.

I like the color. I like the sparkles. I think the strap was an afterthought.

The texture is too lumpy. And I think her silhouette should be more streamlined and vertical or diagonal. It looks like they wrapped a chenille bedspread around her, instead of draping it more like a sheath or a toga.

That said, the lady is a serious clotheshorse. And I mean that she is tall, has a great figure, and can really wear nearly anything to its best advantage.

Keep the color and the sparkles. Make it smoother, like, say, silk charmeuse (satin), with a transparent overlay of silk chiffon with the beads on it.

Make the strap look more integrated with the dress and change the silhouette to more of a sheath and less with the fitted bodice. Fit it around the bust and let the rest of it drape on the bias.

Anyway, Michelle rocks that dress! She pulls off something that Nancy Reagan was too old and too skinny to pull off.
