Maybe I've made a difference
As most of you know,I've written over 200 ltte demonizing Bush, the war in Iraq, etc with a lot of local criticism.Look at the comments to columns written by two local Republicans(none were by me,by the way)

" Isn't there a rock that you can crawl under. You need to get a life! I am quite sure that you believed that George "Dubya" Bush was the savior of this country and I am quite sure that you voted for him not once but twice so if you don't mind right now your opinions are nothing I would hang my hat on! I will agree with the vast majority of this country, yes that is right, you and the few others (from Texas) who still believe that the right-wing, judgmental, hateful Republican party is the party to lead this country, are FINALLY the minority!!! " Why did you vote no to the government offset for teachers, firefighters, police officers, and service people in those professions? My mother would like to retire and she can't because of this which iis totally unfair and biased. I urge you to change your vote the next time it comes up again. I know also that it was put up again as the unfair social security actthe first week of January 09. "

Mr. Barton really misses his Chairmanship, I see. "

" Should we begin to list all of the things that the Republicans did while they were in power? Both parties do it--so stop whining Joe! Redistricting comes to mind, right off the bat and right now in the State of Texas, REPUBLICANS are attempting to do away with the ability to straight party vote. Imagine that! Now why would they want to do that? You are just afraid they might try to clean up the air in Ellis County and your big business buddies might get a little upset. Hmmm, I wonder why struggles you will have to go through. Please...... "

4. of course
Do you think sometimes of how the antagonism of the Bush WH motivated so many to so much productive activism? I watched my own young adults here at home develop their own heightened political awareness in opposition to the Iraq invasion and occupation and other Bushite assaults on our democracy.

We're challenged now to find ways to actually advance our ideals and initiatives through the political process which we've front-loaded with our Democratic senators, representatives, and president. Now that you've got their attention . . .

5. Let's talk about what 'making a difference' means ..............
You have your reasons for writing those letters. Some (most?) of us here know why you do what you do. But you had to have impacted many others who just read your letters. You made some cheer, you made some get angry, and you made some go "hmmmmm?".

You provoked thought. You inspired some of us. You've earned much admiration.

If making a difference only meant success in the cause you favor/oppose, very few who ever try would actually 'make a difference'. But that's not what its about. Making a difference is as much about the difference in the other mostly anonymous lives you touch on a daily basis.

You've sure made a difference to me. I find your single mindedness and tenacity a real inspiration.

You're very special. And I admire you greatly.

6. Thank you
When I moved to this area in 2002,it was right after my son went to Iraq and I was divorced. After my son's late-night phone call from Iraq,I began looking into why exactly we were there.I began looking at the Bush administration and all their associates. And,yes,I became angry....especially when my neighbors praised Bush with a Stepford wife-type admiration. They crucified anyone who dared disagree with him.Something changed in me,and I found my voice.Maybe some other people are finding theirs.
