Idea to deal with Rick Warren this Tuesday...
Everyone attending the inauguration on the mall who thinks Rick Warren should not be participating:

Buy a compressed air horn.

When Warren begins his prayer, start blasting away until he's finished.

Give voice to your dissent.

1. I'm sure Obama would be thrilled.

4. Perhaps not, but Obama will get the message. If you are suggesting dissent is now a bad thing,
you might want to re-evaluate your views of Barack Obama and our cherished democratic freedoms.

5. It's all about timing. This is our unique and wondrous day, not Warren's. Take care of

Warren with a letter to Obama if you don't think he already got the message. And keep fighting for the latest reason Warren is held in such low opinion by fair minded people who understand what he did in California and the particular position he teaches that makes people rise up against him.

7. OK. In spite of all the posts on DU, I guess the Warren invocation isn't that important any more.
never mind.

over a neutral line. Usually I turn if off the prayers of religious leaders who I think are hypocrites and divisive. I'm going to listen to measure inclusivity. If he has any idea how diappointed many people were with his choice, he's going to be neutral.

We are going to be outraged or not. The subject of Warren can be jump started again after.

It might help to relieve your disappointment/rage by writing letters to both of them. There is something healing about writing it out. I like the hint taught about writing - get it down, then get it good. Let out your rage in the first step, let loose write fast, then make it coherent in a rewrite. It really helps me. (In a way - DU is a place for the first step - letting out the rage, we often don't rewrite.)

I think we'll be writing a lot of letters to the President or the person who we think can advise him.

18. I want to come and watch you get an air horn past security.
That'd be worth listening to Warren all by itself.

16. Another bad idea. Don't spoil Obama's day.

I didn't vote for Obama (or McCain) but I wouldn't do anything to spoil his inauguration.

6. Maybe just stand there for the WHOLE THREE MINUTES.
Alternately, yes...you could be like the Repubs yelling during McCains concession speech and make sure the media gets to broadcast...over and over and over...what whiny assholes Democrats can be.

Personally, I'd just wait out the 180 seconds and enjoy the rest of the inauguration.

12. Air horns = asshattery
Or so it has been said.

Those who have problems with Warren don't have to be silent, but they also don't have to be obnoxious and disrupt a public event.

15. Exactly. Any rudeness during Warren's invocation will only

suggest that Democrats/liberals/Obama supporters are low class.

Fortunately, prayers don't have to be applauded so all people have to do to be polite is let the man do his thing and leave. They don't have to listen.

Choose another Warren event for the airhorns.

9. I was just as upset with the choice of Warren as most were, but,
if there is a silver lining, he has been exposed as he never would have been had he not been chosen.

Once hailed as a moderate, he is now viewed as a bigoted, misogynist, and racist.

Most people are just turning their backs.

17. If everyone held up a pink flag/scarf/hat/whatever during the invocation
Edited on Sun Jan-18-09 01:40 PM by IDemo
It would provide a visual show of support for the GLBT community without being disruptive or rude. Might make for a good news photo, as well.

- edit to add: possibly a balloon release as well.

19. That is a good idea. Don't scream, don't attempt to silence him, but hold up a banner stating
something like marriage is a civil right. I doubt anyone could get a banner past security, though.

20. That's why I'm thinking - hat/cap/scarf/tissue, etc. - security wouldn't have an "issue" with it
You can wear your article of clothing all day, but hold it over your head during Warren's bit. I think the visual would be pretty impressive if enough folks got on board.
