Pre-George Bush, that was a common mantra of people turned off by politics. They really saw no difference between Bush and Gore. Now, eight years later, I think you will find few people that will make that argument, with the possible exception of Ralph Nader?
But, what have we lost in the last eight years? We lost our good name as a people, even if people hated our government, most people around the world respected the American people, to a large degree. We lost our self-respect, when we found out that our government was torturing prisoners and spying on its own citizens. We lost our courage. We were told to be fearful. We lost our ability to hold our politicians accountable. We lost the very idea of justice. We lost hope and we lost our spirit. We were beaten down with lies and propaganda. Many of us became cyncial.
However, with the election of Barack Obama, hope has been restored. Our spirit has been renewed. We feel that perhaps we have dodged the bullet. Never again should we permit anyone to say that it doesn't matter who we vote for because they are all the same.
With George W Bush, our system failed us miserably. Not only our financial and economic system, but our political system, our Congress and our Senate, failed us also. It is scary even today, to think about how our Congress and our Senators went along with George W Bush to the extent that they did. No one was looking out for us, the common people. How close did we come to total collapse??
